Is Bert coming out?

Bert is a muppet like any other. He enjoys dancing, exploring and collecting bottlecaps. For over forty years, Bert has lived with his constant companion Ernie. Their close relationship has caused much speculation. After years of denials and threats of lawsuits, Bert appears to have tweeted his first step out of the closet. Yes, this is the real Sesame Street twitter account

This post was deleted for the following reason: I love Bert and Ernie, but this feels like random Buzzfeed blogger fishing for clicks on the strength of a ridiculous overparsing. -- cortex

I might be reading into the tweet too much.

You don't say?

Uh. Sometimes a mohawk is just a mohawk?

(Not that what their little felt hearts do relation-wise is any of my business anyways.)

'Mo' as in "HoMOsexual" is I guess what people are thinking.

In other news, "It" is a euphemism for sexual intercourse.

The tweet in question:

Bert: Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr. T’s? The only difference is mine is a little more ‘mo,’ a little less ‘hawk.’

For all you people new to twitter, comparing your hair to an 80's TV action star is how you announce your sexuality. Mr. T = gay.

You don't want to know what Jan Michael Vincent is.

Mr. T = gay.

When T finds that, I'm in for a pitying.

The gayest thing Mr. T has ever done.

Seriously though, it's not about Mr T. It's about the emphasis on "mo." What else could it stand for? Elmo, Emo, Monster? None of those are obvious enough to overpower the implication presented.

Well, get load of this earlier tweet with a video link...

Good morning everyone! Wake up, Ernie style! http://bit.ly/aPQAAa

Ernie is going over to Bert's bed and singing a showtune while pointing out his various body parts. NOTHING GAY ABOUT THAT.

Next week on Plate-of-Beaning Sesame Street's Tweets!

Elmo: Elmo’s favorite toy that start with the letter V: Elmo’s violet violin! They should make all violins that color, don’t you think?

Knows more than three color names, appreciates classical music. Do I have to paint you a picture?

Grover: My fur is so itchy today!!! Ugh!

Still coming to terms with something that makes him uncomfortable in his own skin. Read between the lines.

Abby Cadabby: Flying is fun! But when you non-Fairies fly, at least you get Frequent Flier points!

Bert's tweet could refer to "Mo" as in Mo Howard of the Three Stooges (who had a kind of an S&M thing going with one or another of his brothers and a guy named Larry)... but that little tuft of hair he has is hardly a 1/4 Mo, if you No what I mean...

...and Elmo luvs his Violet Violin... he plays it ALL day!

In July 1916 Rene ('Mo') teamed up with comedian Nat Phillips ('Stiffy'), and the duo became the famous—or infamous—'Stiffy' and 'Mo', renowned for their bawdy, 'blue' comedy.

Confirmed: Bert from Sesame Street feels more of an affinity with former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and Minister for the Cabinet Office the late Mo Mowlam than he does with those advocating aggressive stances in foreign policy. [Like] [Tweet] [Beanplate]

Honestly, can't two males share a bed or dance around a kitchen without people wondering about their sexuality?
posted by Electric Dragon at 2:58 AM on June 15, 2010 [1 favorite]

Yeeeeaaaahno. If the Sesame Street Powers That Be were going to finally do this, they'd do it with quite a bit more grace and sensitivity than making a pun on the word "homo".

I continue to hope that they will eventually out Bert and Ernie, but as for now I am angry that I gave that Buzzfeed blogger my click.

obviously he's referring to Mo from Dykes to Watch Out For - and she's pretty darn gay

and "hawk" obviously refers to Hawkman - no one wants to be likened to him, especially Bert

What implication? I have never ever ever ever ever ever EVER heard "mo" refer to "homosexual". Ever.

so tinky winky was just a smoke screen?

and maybe he means moe tucker?
posted by msconduct at 5:19 AM on June 15, 2010

Which doesn't mean I think Ernie and Bert aren't gay. They totally are. (Have you seen the latest incarnation? It takes place in their bedrooms, in their actual beds. Ernie goes over to Bert's bed every time they have a fantasy adventure. I am absolutely, positively, 100% not kidding.) Nonetheless, I don't think this tweet is supposed to be outing Bert. As someone else said above, when Sesame Street decides to talk about homosexuality, they'll talk about "different ways to love" or whatever, not make an ambiguous-at-best pun.

ANY TWO MALES WHO ARE ROOMMATES AND/OR FRIENDS ARE PROBABLY ALSO HOMOSEXUAL

None of those are obvious enough to overpower the implication presented.

'Mo' = Homo? I'm sorry, that's fucking lame. And a reach. And even lamer because it's such a reach.

'Mo' = 'Mo Money'… referring to Burt's fast-and-loose lifestyle of bling & bitches
'Mo' = 'Moe'… of the Three Stooges
'Mo' = 'Moo'… the sound a cow makes
'Mo' = MO = 'Montana'… the wide, flat expanses of open sky, symbolizing how alone he feels because he has to constantly pretend… HOLY SHIT HE IS GAY!
