Soccer, the other name for the game.

As we approach the world cup final game, it seems to me soccer has risen significantly in popularity with adults in the USA. We still call it by a different name than football, but it seems Americans can blame that on another country.
This post was deleted for the following reason: Blurby little article isn't great post material. Toss the link into the existing World Cup thread, maybe? -- cortex
When I was a kid, I always thought it was called that cause you sock the ball.
They also call it soccer in South Africa.

It was soccer in Australia, too, until just recently they officially changed it. No idea if common usage has followed. Is this really a mystery?

Also mentioned in the New Yorker.
Accidentally flagged as fantastic, meant to flag as 'I really don't think we need yet another World Cup post.'

Just came here to say it seems like a lot of MeFites read Kottke. A lot of times I'll read something on his site then see it on the blue a couple days later (like this, for example). Not complaining. Just observing

I actually don't frequent Kottke much (once or twice a year) but the internet is a small world. I'm new here so I'm still getting to know the community. Fun to know Kottke is on here though.

That was a really great link, thanks. I love etymology.
The first comment in the article was a real winner too...
I guess we are all lucky that they used the 3rd, 4th, and 5th letters (of association) and not the first three so that we are not all playing AssBall.

Why are we linking to a spam blog that steals its content from elsewhere?

For those without a sense of humor/full understanding of the English language - Taibbi was joking.

But we don't call it SocBall, the fair comparison would be "asser," which sounds more like an Egyptian president than a body part.
