Globe of Blogs

Globe of Blogs lists weblogs by location (Portugal, anyone?), title, authors's name, sex, age or birthday (why?). Problem is, the list is scanty at best. Sign yourself up.
Given the age of the directory -- less than a week -- it's actually developing really quickly. Kudos are due to Heather for developing this and has shown her commitment to grassroots 'blog community building yet again. (For those not in the know, Heather is also the brain behind the megameme, the Friday Five.)

I almost signed up before I realized I wasn't really welcome (my site is a mixed bag). It's a shame "blog" is defined so narrowly, as I'd like to get to know more local folks, whether they're using the traditional weblog format or not.
Ah well, to each his own.

Why not sign up anyway? If you have any of the elements in consideration, what's wrong with "adding your uniqueness to the collective?"

Not tot take anything from what Heather has done, I think it's another great resource, but there is also The Pepys Project which does something similar.

The registry I started in '98 is for diaries. We link each other in case you don't think you fit in where you're at...

I only just recently came to understand that I'd been incorrectly using the two distinctions interchangeably, as most sites seem to have both elements going on.
I wonder when that divide in classifications will break down.
A site seems a bit stark to me if it doesn't have some of the creator in it, and a bit pointless if it doesn't look outwardly like a blog.

umm... i've been into this for a few years, and just now i find out this *ISN'T* the definition of a blog?
screw this, that's my definition of one, and that's the one i've been telling people for years.
thank god anything truely personal can never be considered 'generic'.

My site fits into the definition of a weblog also, if by weblog you mean a site which has a section which is updated on a regular basis, said section being one which mentions and links to various sites on the web. But my site doesn't fit into the weblog world as painted with the weblog community brush, since it's pixel/icon-centric and I only mention sites that have icons or pixelly things. Very dull reading if you aren't into that stuff. I don't believe I've ever been linked by another weblog, and I think I may be the only iconish (I like to make up words) weblog out there besides the rarely updated Gui Galaxy. So I do "blog", but I don't tell you what I ate for dinner or what I'm lusting after on eBay.
So these big-ass lists of weblogs sites are not looking for sites like mine, either. You either fit or you don't, and if you don't, you move on and you find a big-ass list of whatevers that you do fit into, or you start one.

I, too, was disappointed that "blog" was so narrowly defined. They do point us "web journalists" to Diarist.net, which seems to be a closely related cousin to Globe of Blogs.
Still... I think of myself within the blog community and wonder what, in human nature, requires us to constantly strive for exclusivity in the name of clarity (not meaning to set off another round of the blog definition wars).

It's foolish how they are ruling out journals and diaries. The boundaries are hopelessly (and happily) blurred, and getting fuzzier every day.
Blah on their narrowly defined blogs. If they choose to exclude people and, as a result, webloggers don't form the strong communities that are possible, well...
On the other hand, I can always go the LiveJournal Directory and find 130 Portuguese weblogs/journals, or do a search for Lisbon and find 22. Once we start adding those people with RSS feeds who aren't LiveJournal users into our directory too, well, that will be interesting.
