MetaTalk post: Team Threaded Comments
Excuse me Ambrosen this MeTa is for conversation about comments by a user, not 'A User'. If you'd like to talk about comments by 'A User' please open a separate MeTa.

Actually it's crucially important to me that we make room for both legitimate moderation concerns and shitposts. I don't want to be part of a site that lacks either.

MetaTalk is more loosely moderated and comments where people are being a more jumpy are generally allowed. That said, I definitely see the case for deleting the original comment, but believed and still do it was important to leave as example of where the problem started, so there would be no question of what was said, while removing others that were beginning on pile on, which we discourage on the site.

So 'a user' is allowed to be a fighty asshole... [more]

well, schmod did make it a lil personal against the user so I get why that comment was deleted.

Speaking for myself, and only for myself, I was appalled that the user's vitriol towards another user was allowed to stand and anyone calling out that it was unwarranted vitriol had comments deleted. That does not feel like a level playing field for all of us. I also requested clarification about the outlandish claim that the user is allowed to block another user in ANY thread... [more]

I think the fact that the "Geez, what did I do to you guys" comment from the A User sockpuppet was deleted is pretty pathetic. Even if it weren't amusing (and for the record, it was), what does it say about Metafilter governance that a comment gently poking fun at the authority will get deleted?

In the past, if a Mefite was consistently at the center of several controversies and contentious interpersonal disputes, month after month, year after year, while expressing zero self-awareness or remorse and showing no signs of losing steam, what would happen?

Were they banned? Or did we just collectively agree they could stick around and continue stoking the flames because they regularly post FPPs and have a high number of likes because they have the copious free time... [more]

MetaTalk post: Is "please no name calling" a big ask?
as a second gen immigrant tranny who did repeatedly anglicize and americanize her old name (not a deadname, I do cherish it in anyway) before tossing it out and replacing it with an easy to read name in the two languages she cares about

please don't use immigrants or trans people your excuse in this liberal self-struggle session

I truly can't decide what is more pathetically cringey and lame: calling him "Drumpf", or people asking not to call him Drumpf as it is engaging in "name calling".
posted to MetaTalk by windbox at 11:25 AM on June 3, 2024
This may be a cringe joke, but it is essentially the most punching up a joke can be. We don't need to limit jokes at the expense of incredibly powerful people.
posted to MetaTalk by ssg at 10:35 AM on June 3, 2024
So yes: tired joke. But the mental gymnastics required to present it as some kind of attempt to shame immigrants or dishonor the wishes of people who change their name are... substantial. We could find something better to put that much effort into than assuming that kind of bad faith.

Some people have taken to calling JK Rowling Joanne because 1) she hates it, apparently, and 2) she's a repugnant transphobe and massively platformed spreader of hate who ironically doesn't respect trans folks' chosen names and pronouns. There's a lot of overlap there with why people say Drumpf.

Is it cringey? Pointless? Annoying to read? Probably.

Is the strong preference just to not refer to these people at all? Probably.... [more]

I find all the resistance lib era names for Trump kind of dumb and silly, but In general if there isn’t an actual reason to require other users to post a particular way there shouldn’t really be a rule about it.

in my eyes, fairly directly analogous to deadnaming.

it absolutely is the fuck not. that’s a WILD leap to make.

Hi. I'm an immigrant and I changed my name in the US.

This is not an offensive joke. It isn't close to being one. Please do not make immigrants pawns in a quest to be offended.

Thank you.

Marx seems orthogonal to fascism, the topic of the really quite interesting article.

Fascism isn't the topic of the article; calling the GDR "fascist" just lets communism off the hook. The article is about the system of surveillance developed in a totalitarian communist country, and about how people can allow ideology to blind them to a country's crimes and even make them complicit in them.

Just because we're seeing a... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Violet seeds in bulk
"May not be available in the nursery trade, but commonly found in yards" - Common Blue Violet / Viola sororia per GrowNative.org.
Specifically, "Seed collection, storage, and germination practices may affect Viola reintroduction outcomes." I agree that transplanting is the way to go. In my experience they are likely to grow if you just toss a plant or a hunk of its root onto the ground, so transplanting doesn't have to mean carefully digging holes and setting plants into them. Just find a place where violets are growing as weeds, pull some up, bring them home and drop them onto the bare spots. Or break off pieces of root from some of the bigger clumps already growing in your yard and put them in the bare spots. You can push them... [more]

I found a few pages with discussion about transplanting wild violets: 1 2 3. It looks like you can just dig some up from where they are growing and transplant them to areas where you want them to grow. And that sounds easier and with a greater chance of success than growing from seed.

Sample advice: "Don't let their delicate appearance fool you. They are insanely Hardy plants. Just dig the tubers and put them wherever you want, they will resprout.... [more]

Seconding Prairie Moon for seeds in bulk. Violets also spread like wildfire once they get going so I feel like a little has the potential to go a long way.
posted to Ask MetaFilter by hazel79 at 7:58 PM on May 29, 2024
Great idea! Violets are much better for the environment too, eg require less mowing and provide better resources for wildlife.

Prairie Moon has seed packets $3 for ~50 seeds. Which is a lot better but still not great bc they can be a little fiddly to grow from seed.

I would ask around on Next Door, Facebook etc, you may find some misguided souls who consider them weeds and welcome you to take them. Or people who like them abs have plenty. They... [more]

We have sat in (but not driven) the 2024 Toyota Venza and Toyota Highlander. Both were hybrids, and if we needed more room either would be an upgrade from our RAV4 hybrid and our younger daughter's Prius hybrid.
We are still holding onto our 2004 Honda Odyssey, although it needs work. Loved the road trips with the kids along with our overpacking tendencies. We can get 4 x 8 sheets of plywood in there!

Toyota has a Highlander hybrid, and Kia makes a Sorento hybrid and a pure-electric EV9, all of which are (at least a bit) smaller than the Atlas.

The Merc GLB, and its EQB EV sibling, are technically 3-rows, despite being quite compact. I've heard that MB's EV line is selling rather slowly, and there are often deals to be had.

MeFi post: Exactly how stupid was what OpenAI did to Scarlett Johansson?
I think hiring a soundalike to voice-clone doesn't actually help their case... If you voice-clone an Obama impersonator, it's still pretty obvious what you're up to. Especially if you tweet 'hope' concurrent with the release.

I worked with Jack at the start of Twitter. He's not dumb. At the time I knew him best he was very smart, and capable, and had a strong product intuition.
