After watching that movie, it's time to update some lyrics...
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
A little flesh, a little history

really good link -- thanks.
on a more, let's say, professional (as in higher-budgeted) level, there's a marvelous Thai movie that has recently been shown at the TriBeCa Film Festival and is currently looking for a US distributor: Last Life in the Universe posted by matteo at 4:21 PM on May 24, 2004

I'll humble self-link The Sky Bar, probably the scariest bar in the world and The Golden Palace which is just plain amazing. Both in Bangkok, the greatest city in the world. posted by i_cola at 8:06 PM on May 24, 2004

You and your Sky Bar, i_cola. :)
Personally, I never saw a more attractive crowd than the one at Velvet Underground, in Singapore (connected with the slightly more infamous Zouk, but IMHO far nicer). And while I agree nothing quite beats dangling from the top of a skyscraper, HK's Kee Club does have its own Picasso's. Which is nice.
There used to be a great traffic cam of BKK online, but it's sadly unavailable. So instead you can watch some Thai kids in their classroom, or follow around the Thai Web Cam Man who walks around broadcasting pics of wherever he is in Thailand. posted by Civil_Disobedient at 10:26 PM on May 24, 2004

Electrin: Oh, yeah, I know -- these sorts of things are also what I think of when I picture SE Asia. But the movies remind me of the hustle and bustle of urban Bangkok or Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur. posted by armage at 9:44 AM on May 25, 2004
