Full size associated press photos from a member of SomethingAwful who supposedly works for AP. We get to see very large sized photos that are normally only seen by those on the inside.

Im sorry, you can only view these by browsing the SomethingAwful forums, so go through the first link. SA only opens its doors publicly for short periods of time, so if you want to keep this pictures, save them!

Fantastic and (in most cases) horrifying. Thanks, Keyser. Those high-quality images have a very heavy effect.

Oh, and as far as I understand copyright laws, AK74 might become some serious problems, but I assume that has been mentioned at somethingawful already.

Very nice link.

Also, a nice inside story you can read by browsing the same link : among the pictures there's one of a mil howtizer lent by the military to shoot projectiles at mountains ! Old news for some, but not for those who don't know shooting mountains is one way to trigger avalanches in advance (I like how it sounds) so that you can safely snowboard etc. It's easy, it works.

So now apparently the U.S. mil is asking to get back their howtizer to employ them in Iraq..so far a reasonable request, one would think.

But one SA reader, who says he was an howtizer operator, says he's now very scared because he knew that the mil got thousands of howtizers, so he's asking himself...if they're employing all the howtziers, how long till they recall me to duty ? Wow, what a way to learn you're sooooo close to going to Iraq.

I'm never quite sure why the wire runs these. Nobody ever even thinks about printing them. All that happens is the Picture Editor goes "eugggh! Come see this!". Then the office crowds round, everyone retches, and we all go back to work feeling smug about being on the in-crowd.

The "best" ones are after suicide bombings. At the recent Russian one there were photographs of the bomber with her stomach missing etc. Eugh.

Huh? _WTF_ just happened to the last forty five minutes? I mean, I was just sitting there, and came across this link, and...now my hard drive is way more full...

FANTASTIC FPP. Wow. I am utterly furious that I can't get images of this quality on a regular basis. Where can I pay for wire access?

LOL

"MetaFilter ruins everything"

"Quit wasting bandwidth. These aren't for you."

That is what I get if I click on any link in the SA forum.

Funny. This part of the internet is only for a few certain people coming from one certain message board! Not you other people coming from another message board!

10 years after the modern internet era began, people still don't "get" the internet.

But at the same time we don't "get" his hosting bill either.

Let's not get carried away here. I missed this whole thing, so I may be totally off here, but it seems like a specific community posted (possibly copyrighted) high bandwidth images for its members. And if they shut off a (possibly massive) stream of outsiders slamming their servers, they "don't get the internet"? Now, if they were actually *surprised* by that development, I'd have to agree with you.

OP: crank said it better.

Actually, in this case, yes, it is for only a few certain people coming from one certain message board. On the SomethingAwful forums, it's implied you don't share most links that are posted internally outside of SA. If JoeSAUser posts a link to his personal site having gauged his available bandwidth for in-forum viewing only, it could crush his site if 10 people post 10 different links to other highly trafficked sites. And on SA, due to it's massive viewership both paid and non, it's a valid concern. Especially here with those links to half mb photos floating around.

So yeah, I think he "gets" the internet - all too well. Although I may be biased having ponied up the $10 for membership myself. :)

On preview: What everyone else said.

"Nope I don't "get" the Internet. Please stop whining because you want somthing for free" -- second picture link.

This is kinda fun. Can we post things that only MeFites can read, and post snarky comments when others try?

FYI, Keyser also posted this in "SA-Mart":

Hello ladies and gents, heres the scoop:
I am selling my Metafilter User Account, slightly used but very high quality.
Metafilter has not accepted new members for over 1 year now, they currently have over 20,000 members. This is a late model account, with less than 1000 posts. I am selling the account so I can pay for college.
If you are interested, post an offer. No, I will not give the username out except to the seller.

I'd say the very least he deserved was being permanently banned from SA.

my guess is not.
we've sucked a couple of GBs of bandwidth from this guy's server already.

Whoa I tried selling my account once? What the hell was I on?
posted by Keyser Soze at 10:29 AM on June 7, 2004

Well, it's like $100/TB in modern hosting costs, but he might not have been set up so well. If AK74 ever reads this message, I'd totally help cover his costs for Metafilter's intrusion (*ahem* someone from SA, help me out here). Just mail me.

Those were some f*cking awesome photos.

ugh. what a waste. bribe a login/password for the AP archive out of a local newspaper's "webmaster" if you're looking for some graphic thrills.

i will say that i used to have an account when i worked for an online news organization, and it was pretty cool to look through all the huge pictures from the AP feed (sports images were particularly excellent at the time, 1996-2000).

now would be an extremely depressing (albeit extremely educational) time to click through that feed.

wait... let me get this straight, the guy who runs somethingawful is given $330,000 a year by his users, and he's whining about a couple hundred or so hits in the last 4 hours?
posted by crunchland at 10:53 AM on June 7, 2004

Actually I think the bandwidth problems are for SA members who put stuff on their sites for the people inside. Not the owner of the site.

After what effugas offered, it would be hard for the host of those pictures to be upset about this whole thing. I thought the hosting was done on a public hoster, like most pictures on SA. Sorry for the trouble. (Note: SA may have many members, but only started charging a few years back. Its possible that half of those accounts were paid for.)
posted by Keyser Soze at 11:08 AM on June 7, 2004

Crunchland, those images weren't hosted on the SA servers.

Also, its not "33,000 x $10/year", its "$10 (once) to join, other fees for other features or capabilities".
There is no "yearly renewal fee".

Part of that "33,000" number is from when it didn't cost anything to sign up.

Wow, quite the shitstorm over this on SA (though maybe not too big by their standards).

KS, apologize to KA47 over there, not in this thread.

First, I had sympathy for AK74. It seems like something of an etiquette breach to post that here. Then, I realized that he knew he shouldn't have been posting these pictures. Then, I saw the ri-fucking-diculous witchhunt.

Which you can no longer see, because it appears they have once again locked up the SA forums.
posted by punishinglemur at 12:30 PM on June 7, 2004

This seems to happen every time a link to SA gets posted. The main reason for this is that SA has the classic porn-site conundrum on its hands: it must provide some free content and forum access in order to attract new paying users, yet can't provide too much or the leechers will quickly make the site unusuable and financially untennable. The problem, therefore, is with that site and the way it is set up, not with this one. Few of them would ever admit this, but that's because everyone at SA is an idiot />. I propose, therefore, a blissful solution from this end:

Can't we all just agree not to link to SA? I'm pretty sure that people interested in reading anything over there already do. Like they say, if you want access to the internal forums, suck it up and fork over the 10 bucks, don't post it here. And JESUS nothing is more annoying that their "please register" page.

Keyser Soze, if that is your house, I'd like to strongly advise you to contact the local police and tell them that strangers are threatening you and your property on an internet message board. Most of me doesn't think that they're serious, but part of me does think so.

I find it amazing that anyone would threaten violence against another person simply for linking to a website.

This is the US. Threatening violence is practically mandatory.

I don't want that guy to lose his job, I apologize for putting his livelihood at risk. Seems I even got my picture up on the SA site, which should be scary but its more humbling than anything. I notice I have a newspaper on the roof of my house. Never noticed that before. Anyways, this is what you goons want: I'm sorry.
posted by Keyser Soze at 1:22 PM on June 7, 2004

Wait a second... the goons at SA think I gave out a non public link to metafilter? How was I able to get to it anonymously? This whole crazy scheme was about me giving away a private url? It was accessable before SA closed it down.
