Blogmusik: Just beggin' for a takedown!

Blogmusik is just what it says it is: a free internet virtual ipod. Search, find, play, save, make playlists. So good I feel like I am missing something.

This must be illegal. Right?

Probably...but it does pretty much kick ass.

Near as I can tell it is french, or maybe canadian. As such, I imagine it doesn't quite have to fear the US RIAA laws.

Not working for me. Page doesn't load.

Yea, this won't be around too long. Enjoy it while it lasts.

It is indeed French, and it's highly illegal. It's pretty great but personally I find the bitrate of a lot of the music unlistenable, and the tags are half wrong.

Someone created a flash front end to their pirated music. Awesome!

It's buggy -- the first 10 or so songs on my playlist all display on one line over each other. The variety of file names for identical songs implies that the content has been gathered from, shall we say, "random internet sources". This is going to fall faster than Metallica's cred did.

But, it's damn fun to use though. Speaking of Metallica, check out an acappela version of Creeping Death.

It seems like it's just searching a bunch of different blogs/sites and listing the results. If they aren't hosting the mp3s, just finding/sorting them, is there a grey area of legality?

Bodega - That is Dokaka. doing the metallica cover.

A live version of Seal's "Crazy."

Dang, I need a real Ipod.
posted by konolia at 2:00 PM on September 9, 2006

Thanks isopraxis!

Dokka is many flavors of genius. I'm listening to his myspace page now. Tasty. OK, now I've stopped. I find it hard to listen to for any length of time (which is true about listening to most of the "geniuses" I know...) Hiyooo!

Getting back on topic, when I created a playlist (trying to create a Guitar Hero soundtrack...) I was given two options for creating the playlist: public or private. But I haven't been able to find any other playlists. Any ideas?

@defenestration: If blogmusik isn't hosting the mp3s, then it's doing an amazing job. I've experienced almost no delays between clicking on a song and hearing music. Webjay is a useful site that creates playlists based on media from other websites. I've noticed "random" sources can be pretty slow sometimes.

Well, if it's just repurposing existing mp3s, it's no different from Webjay, is it?

bodega - do you taste music? (synesthesia? (sp?))
posted by carsonb at 2:34 PM on September 9, 2006

I do not have synesthesia. But, I do have a habit of abusing language.

After playing around with Blogmusik, I find Webjay more practical. It's just so much easier to pick other people's playlists. (Also, the music quality is noticeably better.)

But if I'm jonesing for a particular song, Blogmusik may be my new first stop. (Replacing youtube as the immediate source to answer "how did that go again?")

It's okay, but Pandora is rocking my world too much at the moment for this to not to be worth playing with for more than a minute or so.

Uh.

The Doors is electro? Sting is funk? Ghostface Killah is jazz? Tool is rap? Eminem is "Hebrew songs?"

...yeah.

I've had a "virtual ipod" for years. It's called Winamp.

While on the subject of a cappella, here's a pretty nice a cappella rendering of Dire Straits' Romeo and Juliet.

If they're not hosting the mp3 files themselves it's definitely less illegal than if they were hosting them themselves. But if that's actually the case, then isn't this kind of lame? Whatever happened to respecting people's bandwidth? This feels like it's essentially the same as hotlinking.

that a capella Metallica tune is the most annoying collection of sounds I've ever heard strung together in one piece. So that's impressive.

Really don't want to sound too harsh here Brodie, but maybe the something you're missing is a sense of personal integrity due to the fact that you are enjoying the hard work and efforts of countless thousands of musicians who won't see one red cent for all your enjoyment of their music? Just a thought...

posted by aielen at 12:53 PM on September 10, 2006

flapjax, I've been enjoying the hard work of musicians without paying for it for decades. It's called "radio", you should try it sometime. It helps you find music you might like to buy.
posted by cali at 2:46 PM on September 10, 2006

Hearing a song on the radio and downloading the song (for repeated listening at any time you like) are inherently different. On the radio you're hearing it. When you download it you're owning it. If it happens to be an artist sanctioned download (giveaway), fine. If not, it's, well, theft.
posted by flapjax at midnite at 4:41 PM on September 10, 2006

No, it's copyright infringment, which is more like trespass than theft. But thanks for playing Strained Analogies. I hope you enjoy your copy of the home game, downloaded without permission.
posted by klangklangston at 7:02 AM on September 11, 2006

Oooh, getting all semantic on me, klang. Very impressive. But copyright infringement is, simply, a kind of theft. And actually, a more accurate definition of copyright infringement is when a person or business entity uses someone else's idea, image, too-similar brand name, whatever, for personal economic gain. I'd get into some examples, but, actually, I've got better things to do. You seem like an inteligent person, generally, (I've enjoyed many of your posts in the past) so you can explore it further should you have the time.

And there were no "analogies", strained or otherwise, employed in my previous comment: just definitions.

And whetever the hell the home game is, I didn't download it.

posted by BrodieShadeTree: douchebag

You know, you'd make a much better showing of it if you actually considered the point being made, and addressed it, rather than resorting to the depressingly unimaginative and ultimately pointless tactic of calling me a douchebag. Infantile. Boring.

posted by BrodieShadeTree: Welcome to the internets, please close your door on the way out.

The internets I like are the ones where people are actually engaging in the stimulating exchange of ideas and opinions, not the ones where people hurl 6th-grade-level names at each other. Since you seem to inhabit the latter internet, I will indeed close the door on my way out, and step into one where folks with a bit more inquisitiveness and brainpower still enjoy a lively discussion. I'd tell you to close the door on your way out of that one, but I have a feeling we won't be seeing much of you there anyway.
