Well, to be fair to NASA, most things are.

Pointless for NASA, maybe. But when the Martians invade, they'll have a ready-made checklist for, uh... probing our defenses...

WARNING: The "essentially pointless" link redirected me to a trojan page the first time I followed it. (IE 7, Vista)

It sent me to "scanner.best-click-av1.info/scan.php?campaign=mmb_1268824143&landid=4" and that tried to install software, presumably malware, under the guise of antivirus code.

From the 'essentially pointless' link, which, while it worked just peachy for me (Firefox 3.x, NoScript, AdBlock, XP), I can't very well encourage others to visit. "Simply submit your name and it will be put on a microchip on the Mars Science Laboratory rover and sent off to Mars on 2011. What will happen after that? Nothing. Your name, nothing more than a bundle of ones and zeroes, will stay on the chip, along with the names of thousands of others who have done the same."
'Essentially' pointless? I think we can just go with plain old pointless.

The most interesting thing about this post is Liptsick Thespian's mispost (and apparently the Martians' attempts at installing malware on our computers).

Damn, that's a hard sell. "Buy a spot on this microchip OR WE'LL LET THE BEAR AT HER!"

You can send your name to Mars but in case you didn't know, it's "essentially pointless." pointlessly essential!

Sorry guys! The "pointless" site didn't do anything fishy for me. It seems to be working for some, though...?
