The Taliban, Mormons, and fundamentalist Christians might be correct that civil unions may destroy the institution of marriage, at least in France.

That second link had some interesting numbers. The mode age for women giving birth increased by 4 years since 1989. That seems like a big shift in a short time.

The data seems to say that civil unions (in the case where they happen to be easier to get into and easier to get out of than marriages) will erode the number of marriages.
But this is like saying that the number of two-year cellphone contracts will go down if a company starts offering one-year plans (that still provide a phone subsidy).

It sounds more like people in France aren't really religious, and when the secular alternative arose, they jumped on it. So really it's more like religion was destroying committed relationships prior to the creation of the civil contract.
