Rare Sierra Nevada Red Fox Spotted in Yosemite National Park

For the first time in 100 years, a Sierra Nevada Red Fox has been spotted at Yosemite. Scientists have estimated the total Sierra Nevada red fox population numbers below 50 (fifty).

The forest service has an excellent Sierra Nevada Red Fox Fact Sheet [PDF] about the species.
In 2011, infrared video [yt] captured another rare sighting of the Sierra Nevada Red Fox.

Don't post this where Utah hunters can see it. They will be right up to shoot what they think is a coyote, or yeti.

We also had the gray fox reappear in Presidio Park as well.

Better way to start March than the start so far. Go breed restoration!

I confess my first thought was clouded by the excitement surrounding local microbrew limited runs, and thought that Sierra Nevada had maybe put one out called "Red Fox".

The reality is better.

His eyes may not be that bright in the photo, but he's very bushy tailed.
