Trevor Noah in conversation with Reid Hoffman about AI

One of the more thoughtful people on the planet, Trevor Noah has been thinking pretty deeply about AI and social media and other parts of our lives today. He spoke with Reid Hoffman, creator of LinkedIn, and his podcast co-host Aria Finger to share his thoughts [52m], and they're as surprisingly deep and insightful as you might expect from Noah. It wouldn't fit in the title, but I wanted to call this "Social media shouldn't be held accountable for what is posted on it, but what is pushed by it". That's a tiny bit of what Trevor thinks.

On a very cursory scan Mr Noah posits that it's possible to manage bias technologically. Optimism is refreshing and good but acknowledgement that an open question is undecided (and possibly undecidable) is important.

I think it would be more pertinent to note that Reid Hoffman is also a founder of OpenAI. Or a funder. Or something; it’s not entirely clear on a cursory search. Which, I guess, answers the question, ‘why is a famous person, even one as bright and funny as Noah, giving us any opinion on AI?” - because Hoffman, like Sam Altman, is going around trying to get positive influence for AI science.

That being said, Trevor Noah’s vision of AI as helper was pretty good and more like the versions of AI research I’ve read. I would much rather have heard it from the scientists and researchers, maybe they feature on the other episodes of this podcast.

Trevor Noah is a world treasure.

If you haven't read it, strong recommendation to listen to him read his autobiography, Born A Crime.

spoiler alert: the problem is not AI, the problem is capitalism. Strongly agree with Trevor.

Why am I being told Trevor Noah is "one of the more thoughtful people on the planet," with deep insights about AI? That shit was dumb when people said it about John Stewart. And this is just PR for the richest people on the planet and their plans.

Anyway here's Trevor Noah defending the massacre of 34 striking miners in 2012 because "rubber bullets and teargas ... don't work anymore." Good voice work though.
