I just picked up Flanner's Paris was Yesterday after Frowner mentioned it in another thread. As a window into a certain time and place it's fascinating, but man, that arch ex-pat above-it-all pre-war New Yorker style of writing has really not aged well. Creeping Nazi-ism is treated as lightly as as the latest literary scandal (I know, hindsight is easy), as is the killing of "rioters," and brutal violence is generally played for laughs.
