If you missed Elvis Perkins on Late Night with David Letterman making their national television debut, at least now you can say you knew about these guys before they really hit the big time (check out "Acoustic Slip Away"). I first heard about them on Lex and Terry. Warning, may be NSFW, youtube and audio links. Click at your own risk.

pfft. my podcast has been playing elvis perkins for weeks. WEEEKS.

Also, he's had a pretty tragic homelife. Dad died of AIDS, mom during 9/11. Sad.

Oh yeah, Styxno? A friend of mine has been bugging me to listen to him for at least two months! So there!

Pft...I'm this guy's maternal twin. AND his dad. AND I taught him how to play guitar.

also, I've never heard of him. Thanks for the link...

Elvis Perkins sounds a'ight.

And I guess those Odis guys would be a good listen for those find John Mayer just a little too edgy. The fact that they put the word "soul" in their myspace URL AND their genre kind of proves the old saying: "if you have to say you are, you aren't."

Your favorite musician sucks.

Unless your favorite musician is Elvis Perkins. I've been really digging Ash Wednesday.

Wow, that Slip Away song sounds familiar.

I caught him on Letterman last night and it floored me. I had never heard him before and now I'm definitely interested in hearing more.

Soul of Odis sounds like that band "Blues-Hammer" from the movie Ghost World.

The World Famous: "indie-faux-country post alt-country alternative hipster"

All these words are meaningless. The preocupation with other people's preocupation with faux-post-X is just a smokescreen.
It's all pop. It's all rock and roll. Some of it sucks. Some doesn't.

The World Famous: "
wears a cowboy shirt from Urban Outfitters and plays a sunburst Gibson Southern Jumbo paid for by a trust fund the fact that Dylan didn't dress, look or sound like the Everly Brothers
"

That's irrelevant.

Man, guiatar, microphone. That was wonderful.
except for the big standup bass to his left plus the drummer and whoever the hell was playing the harmonica.

Anyways thanks for the post. I like this sound, so it was right up my alley.

I'm just floored that this thread isn't filled with more whiny bitching about posting of new musicians stuff. I was pretty disgusted with some of you after that Regina Spektor thread last week.

The Letterman appearance reminded me of Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense film.

The Elvis Perkins musicians enter one at at time during the course of the song, building the sound in layers. Pretty cool! Of course, in Stop Making Sense the musicians came out gradually over the first half of the concert, instead of just during a single song.

Turns out it's the drummer (at least on Letterman)

The World Famous: "If they were ugly or un-trendy, you'd never hear about them. Hence my annoyance with SXSW."

Right.
This is the first time in recorded history that a band has dressed in a specific way to attract an audience, or played a single note of music not born athen-like full formed from their head, or in fact done anything at all informed by current fashions.
