It doesn't have the right vibe. It ought to be covered in leather, for one thing. And it needs more brass, less wood.

True, it's a modification of a period rocking chair, but the real Victorian era in this timeline wasn't steampunk.

I'm trying to figure out the justification for Vodka and Cranberry juice tap system. Because that was the liquid refresher of the victorian era, not absinthe or gin.

I'm torn, on the one hand I think individual effort and craftsmanship are good things, and it's clear this is a very detailed well built piece.

On the other hand I hate how steampunk has become "Slap alot of brass and wood onto something" where the interest for me is in the fact that technology from that era is usually very functional, but by virtue of the limitations in materials and necessary complexity of the design to do the job, often attains a kind of baroque elegance.

It's a wonderful interesting project that's everything I hate about a particular aesthetic style.

Also: This.

I agree that steampunk is an old, tired topic.

But, this is a functional item. Not only functional, but functional for disabled people.

This isn't a re-imagining of of a submarine, or the characters from The Matrix, or even a case mod. Wheelchairs, even electric ones, are dreary, stigmatic things. I support anything that makes them cooler.

I'm sure that sitting in the wheelchair made this kid's day. Maybe even his week. You have no idea just how cool this wheelchair is.

More importantly, it's full of booze.

DON'T TELL HIM ABOUT THE BOOZE!

I saw this in action at dragon con last year, on first glance it looked non-functional, and then I saw it move. Steampunk was very much "in" at this particular dragon con, and it was nice to see someone really go with the theme.

Maybe someone should make the crotchety get-off-my-lawners a steampunk cane.

Jabberjaw: 'functional' probably wasn't the best word. Utilitarian would have been better. Essentially I mean that the main components are all necessary for the device to function.

The best Steampunk device ever built was, ironically, officially rejected by the year 1891.

It would be steampunk if it were actually powered by steam. But it's not.
