Ask MeFi post: How long do you think the pandemic trauma will last for most people?
Depends on which version of the pandemic trauma people have, really. For those of us who have, or have loved ones with, disabilities such that the push for “back to normal” feels reckless and is actively endangering us or those we love, the pandemic is still very much actively creating new trauma right now. “When will it go away” is a nonsensical question.

For others where the worst part was the initial fear and uncertainty, but their lives and risk factors are such... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Do I need a bike helmet if I'm not riding on the road?
Unless you are conducting a personal scientific investigation into the effects of a concussion on a human adult, then, yes, you need a helmet.

Bicycle helmets do not protect you against concussions.

Bicycle helmets are designed to reduce the risk of skull fracture during a fall from roughly 5-6 feet on to hard ground. If that is a concern to you, then you should wear a helmet. You should also make sure it's worn properly,... [more]

I ride virtually daily year round. If I'm taking a short, low speed ride in good weather on wide sequestered paths, I don't wear a helmet. My feeling is that, like, Amsterdam is not the head injury capital of the world and that's because people don't in fact constantly get head injuries when they are riding short distances at moderate speeds in good weather on sequestered paths.

Further, our city director of bike share stuff doesn't wear a helmet - she feels that the... [more]

Not sure this is an app but it is kind of a system... Since I also prefer doing smaller tasks, I break my larger (dread-inducing) projects into smaller tasks. In fact, my first small task for a recent larger project was: "Break project into smaller tasks". YMMV. Good luck!

Ask MeFi post: Bye bye academia, hello scary new job
You said that plenty of people "start over" in their 30s and 40s. Maybe it would be helpful to think of it as plenty of people "start" their careers in their 30s and 40s. I'm very glad for the time I spent in my 20s putzing around and exploring different ideas and ways of living and being -- and I'm glad I didn't settle into a career that soon. Ask MeFi post: Is Xbox the right choice for our almost 10 year old?
What kinds of games do he and his friends like and can he get those on Xbox? Xbox is a perfectly cromulent gaming ecosystem from what I hear, but if he isn't interested in the available titles, it's not going to go any better than the Switch. Xbox Game Pass has a lot of things available for a relatively low cost and is a great way to try things out (many of my friends have it for PC!) so that's probably a point in favor of Xbox over PS5, but at the end of the day, if his... I think an Xbox (either a used Xbox One or a new Xbox Series S) is the right move, especially since Xbox Game Pass for $10/month is a great deal for someone just getting into gaming. There's a huge variety of games appropriate for younger players that are on it, loads of full games in different genres, and for one fairly low monthly fee he'd be able to explore a new world of gaming without being pressured by pay for play tactics. Even if he just ends up playing Forza, MechWarrior and Minecraft... [more]

MeFi post: Mastodon is having its moment in the sun
Experiences are so different that you almost can't give the same advice to white people and PoC. There are plenty of exceptions, diffident white people exist, hyperconfident black people exist. But a lot of the time, if you're a PoC entering a new space, you are very aware that you are surrounded by a complicated web of invisible and unspoken rules, and may be reluctant to say anything in case you break them. And a lot of the time if you're a white person entering a new space, you assume you... [more]

I'm not white, I'm on Mastodon, and I think Content Warnings are sometimes presented in an odd way.

A lot of the posts/toots on Mastodon are behind CWs. It's a normal thing. From the point of view of the poster, you see two textboxes, a one-line box at the top labelled "Write your warning here", and a multi-line box labeled "What's on your mind?" If you're posting about a TV show, you put the name of the TV show as a content warning. If you're posting... [more]

So even as there are reasons for things not to be available on Mastodon, there are also other reasons why it might have been a valuable thing to implement, too.

Ask MeFi post: Examples of fascist movements that didn't make it
The Blueshirts were led by General Eoin O'Duffy whose rhetoric muddied the political waters in 1930s Ireland. He never got to send mercenaries to help Mussolini's adventures in Abyssinia but did lead an Irish Brigade to fight for Franco in Spain. Fine Gael, the righter of the two largest centerist parties in the country today, are heckled as "Blueshirts" because FG coalesced from O'Duffy's bund and a mixum of other anti-treaty groups.... There are large hosting providers which don't allow Let's Encrypt, and still charge quite a bit (» than domain costs) per year for a certificate. Unless you're willing to pay for people's SSL certs, or do the logistics of moving old sites to better hosting, best to keep shtumm.

So, your bike has a bunch of gears.

Some bikes have multiple gears both near the pedals (these are called chainrings) and near the back wheel (these are called cogs).

If you have two chainrings, you'll mostly want to use the smaller one when you're going slow and the larger one when you're going fast. If you have three, you'll want to use the smallest one for steep uphill and/or off-road riding, the middle one for most normal riding, and the... [more]

The main issue with using the turntable via Sonos is that you need a component with a line-in.

If you don't already have one you'll need to spend an extra £200-300 to get one. This means that the turntable needs to be close enough to be wired into that component, and then once its set up it could be in streamed to your other sonos components in other rooms.
