Not to be all "rah-rah" Harper, but judging a politician by his wardrobe is more than a little shallow.

I judge him by his appalling policy record, his unquenchable thirst for more power, his shameless willingness to exploit and expand division, his deceitfulness and dishonesty, and an unconscionable stance on climate change that would doom my children to a future profoundly lacking in the quality of life we now enjoy so that he and his... The 14k brigade are still here, but we've got older and a bit more mature. We're all coming up for 10 years of membership now and, in Internet Time, that puts us about in our '50s I think, which aligns with me in real life, coincidentally. Most of us are the ones that snuck or bribed our way in before the daily lottery and long before the $5 noobs. Alberta's current political sitatuation can best be understood in light of the old saying that you should never expect a person to understand something when their salary depends on not understanding it. I really dislike callouts, and calls to delete posts, like this. I think it's really bad for the site for users to act as though a thread continuing to exist is causing some harm in the world. Don't like the thread? Don't read it. Disagree with the substance of a linked blog post? Comment and explain why. But merely discussing something that's happening out there on the web is not a bad thing.

There should be a strong presumption against deleting a member's post, which... [more]

Well, ain't that fuckin' depressing. I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but I was a major factor in Vang Vieng becoming exactly the kind of place I despise. We arrived there sometime in the fall of 2000, with the intention of waiting out the horrible monsoons in the south that year, until we could head back to the Four Thousand Islands. Vang Vieng was a fairly sleepy village twelve years ago, and although it was getting its fair share of backpackers, we kinda liked the vibe. It was a good mix of... [more]

Okay.. I saw this thread erupt as I was watching a movie, Narayama Bushiko, a kabuki style movie about the ancient Japanese custom of obasute, taking the elderly (especially old women) up onto a mountain to freeze to death when they were no longer productive members of society. But I'll get back to that in a minute.

This article hits the two major points and gets them completely wrong. First it mentions the Industrial Revolution as the start of a New Golden Age when... [more]

There was once a very old man, whose eyes had become dim, his ears dull of hearing, his knees trembled, and when he sat at table he could hardly hold the spoon, and spilt the broth upon the table-cloth or let it run out of his mouth. His son and his son’s wife were disgusted at this, so the old grandfather at last had to sit in the corner behind the stove, and they gave him his food in an earthenware bowl, and not even enough of it. And he used to look towards the table with his eyes full of... [more]

We aren't as nutso aggressive about it as we could in theory be, but we do remove it when we see it and it makes sense to do so. As far as I can tell, the US isn't so much a modern civilization created "by the people, for the people" as what one might term a Bandit Engine: a complex financial device with numerous hierarchical layers that is cunningly designed to extract the maximum amount of negotiable capital possible from its citizenry by fucking them every way possible using the barest minimum amount of lube necessary to render open revolt unlikely.

the irresponsibility of having someone else pay for it rubs me the wrong way.
To make health insurance an earned privilege is to condemn people to physical suffering or even death because they failed to secure a job that gives them health insurance, or they don’t earn enough, or they happened to contract an expensive illness, or a member of their family did.
