Not all of us need, or want, $10,000 worth of Adobe and Microsoft software to be creative. So, here's some alternatives, each available on every major platform:

GIMP, for all your drawing and photo-editing needs. (Windows and OSX.)
Inkscape, for vector graphics creation.
Scribus, for incredibly powerful document creation.
FontForge, if you want to make your own fonts.
OpenOffice, the old standby for word processing, spreadsheets, and all those other office needs.

What factors should I be looking at when considering the purchase of a new digital camera. I know that a lot of people think more megapixels = better quality. But I have a 4 megapixel SLR that takes *infinitely* better pictures than a friend's 10 megapixel camera. Looking at the cameras, it is obvious: my SLR has huge lenses that are expensive, his has a tiny hole in the front. But I have no objective idea what makes the difference. Some cameras have "big lenses" that seem to be mostly for show. So I am trying to figure out what really goes into making a good picture, and how to calculate it. What specs should I look at and how should I look at them?

Is there a free program that lets me broadcast "white noise" through my computer speakers? My dogs are vigilant. They bark at noises outside the house, at all hours of the night. We have a "White Noise" machine in our bedroom, and it seems to block the sounds of the outside world quite well, but... our dogs sleep downstairs, and we sleep upstairs, and...we like the white noise machine for ourselves. I was wondering if there were any sort of software that I could run on my downstairs PC, that would play similar white noise, to distract the pups, since my computer is in the room where they tend to sleep. We'll probably buy another white noise machine, but in the meantime, can anyone help? Free software would be preferred! (Or perhaps a website that plays white noise?)

My google search results are redirecting me to certain sites (see 'more inside') due to adware/spyware that AdAware and Norton can't find. It's intermittent, and happening to both Firefox, IE, AND Chrome, although Chrome is choosing to simply not load the pages and gives me error messages. I can't google a solution because of the redirecting problem. Can you help?

Who writes about better Powerpoint presentations,and says most are bad? Seeking book and/or author about how to do PowerPoint, by a woman who spoke on Minnesota Public Radio (or NPR) about a month ago, before Thanksgiving. I've Googled, and searched MPR/NPR to no avail She did the Ppt's for Al Gore's slide show and movie. She said most presentations were awful. and Sounded convincing. That's most of what I remember. And there are lots of PowerPoint books. can anyone help?

Like many, I like designer handbags...though not so much the price tag. Anyone know of a good website that sells good replicas that is based in Canada? Some of us have jobs we've imagined having since we were kids (doctor, lawyer, ballerina...). And some of us have jobs with weird titles we never imagined having or somehow stumbled into (acquisitions editor, paid search marketer, partner services representative, circulation manager, health services coordinator...). Many of us in the latter category love our jobs - either because we're good at them, we get paid well, we like the people we work with, value the company's mission, or all of the above. How does a husband and a wife deal with nagging and the resultant arguments? My wife is a self-admitted nag. I am a self-admitted procrastinator. She likes to make decisions and do things now. I would rather sleep on it and let things develop a bit. I don't have a problem with leaving a dish or two in the sink. She needs the place to be near spotless. I am not a slob. She is not anal-retentive. When she wants me to hang curtains, she wants it done now. If I need something done, I will do it myself on a deadline I feel will not impact the situation. I don't think this problem is unique to our relationship. How have you and your wife better dealt with this proverbial problem? A good answer to this question is not 'just pick up your sh*t!'.

How did having a baby change your life?
