You know, in the early 20th C, German-speaking rabbits delivering eggs suffered terribly at the hands of French aggression. The French believed, rather mistakenly, that rabbits had largely supported the Germans during the Franco-Prussian war and were staunch supporters of Bismark's policies. This kind of tensions led to armed patrols being necessary to protect the rabbits, and, if those patrols were to, you know, accidentally invade the Low Countries, well, these things happen....

I am curious about Easter. How early in Christian history did Jesus's resurrection get tacked onto this spring renewal observance? And how long have the pagan fertility symbols of egg and rabbit been associated with this equinox? Did the church ever try to suppress those glaringly non-religious symbols? Did it ever succeed anywhere? If so, when did the easter bunny make his comeback?

Do other major religions paste their myths over the top of longstanding pagan rituals, or is that a Christian thang?

Re: the issue of Puck with the devil: I have a Life magazine 'Easter' cover from 1898. It's a very strange scene that includes a blue demon up in a tree.
Never thought there was a connection between Easter and devil figures.

Thanks, biddeford. So now I know that Mephistopheles was the mascot of Life magazine. But on this cover, he's wearing what looks like a red hoodie, so not a fashionably dressed devil. The artist is E.N. Blue.
