Yesterday at the office I heard some people (not in my department - I don't know them and I'm only in the office one day a week) talking about Groundhog Day (the event, not the film) and I shouted out from my cube "Groundhog Day used to mean something in this town. They used to pull the 'hog out of the ground and they used to eat it." Total stunned silence in response.

This is our chance at redemption.

We aren't reading the same article and doing the same thread. Now we are informed by a story of hope after strokes, watched Secrets of the Abyss, reviewed the events of 1979, sharing and reflecting on the strike in the UK, looked at an anniversary Dinosaur Comics, learned about other groundhog days, Māori language and outlook, saw Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and heard about the new laws for LSD in Australia.

We've grown, we've learned. And now we can really understand what watching Groundhog Day over and over is all about.

It is about loving yourself, loving others, friendship, recursion, yadda yadda.

I'm neurochemically wired to almost require novelty to survive, so the idea of doing this makes my skin crawl. I have enough trouble with the repetitive nature of time loop stories that reading/viewing the first time is mildly annoying. I cannot imagine a full year. There are less than ten movies I've watched more than once, and usually by five times I kind of hate them.

Still, I spend enough time repeating quotes from comedy sketches where they feel appropriate that I get that sense of the power of nostalgia and repetition. I think that's what makes Catholic mass so powerful for so many people. Maybe someday I'll be in the re-watchers club because I enjoy that feeling of a familiar sequence of events too, and not just because my memory is less reliable.

The second season of the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya caused quite a stir when 7 of the 14 episodes were basically the same episode played over and over again (with a few small variations) before they broke out of the time loop. The viewership got more and more irate every week as it became clear that this episode was yet another repeat of the week before. It was kind of an epic troll on the part of the studio.

If you're a fan of time loops, give Replay by Ken Grimwood a shot. I read it shortly after it was released, and was initially disappointed in Groundhog Day because I thought Replay's story was more interesting. Groundhog Day grew on me, over time, and while there are other loop movies I like more, my favorite story overall is still Replay.

I know, right? I saw this novelty post and I still had to go to fucking work. It's like the day I realized that time travel will probably never, ever be possible, so time-travel fantasies are a waste of time. Sucks.
