7/10, but what is this Internet that they speak of with "Flash games" and "popups"? Nothing about serial connections to DEC mainframes or why JANET e-mail addresses were quietly awesome anywhere …

When one of my friends was in high school he lived with his mom and sister and was, at some point, in his room looking at pornography while they were downstairs. Unexpectedly, after being on this page for a short while, the site shouted through his speakers "I'M LOOKING AT PORNOGRAPHY!" which was very startling and, I can only assume, absolutely killed the mood.

7/10. Missed the screamer (I swear that bunny screamed at you), the emotions, and the names of the hamster dancers.

Nary a mention of bombs, space robots, or future girlfriends.

And this is older internet to me, but isn't it really sort of "middle internet" in the grand scheme of things?
posted by postcommunism at 5:20 AM on May 23, 2014 [1 favorite]

I missed out on all of these. Was expecting questions about Usenet and Gopher. This is not "old-school internet", it's middle-school internet at best.

9/10, missed the screamer too.

And this is older internet to me, but isn't it really sort of "middle internet" in the grand scheme of things?

I think they're using "internet" as shorthand for "world wide web" in this case. Recognizing that is the secret 11th test question.

9/10 - I've never seen that balancing rabbit before in my life.

Loved the freeze and restart when you start clicking on too many banner ads. Seeing Windows 95 again brought back some memories of trying to furtively read terrible fanfiction in the corner of the living room. Awww....

7/10. I actually closed the test the first time when the screamer question came up (because FUCK NO) but went back and redid the test (same answers, no cheating) after no one reported any particularly ill effects.

Still gave me a little jump but ultimately it's funny, not shit-your-pants frightening. Also FUCK SCREAMERS

posted by still_wears_a_hat at 5:39 AM on May 23, 2014 [6 favorites]

Yeah, by "Internet" they obviously mean "the adoption of the Internet by everyday schlubs that started when the web became a thing".

Even for that, though, it seems a little late. Ask me how to reconstitute an LZA file full of grainy pornographic GIFs (non-animated), given a 37-part set of posts in a Usenet group. Or to name two of the physical properties that were measured in The T.W.I.N.K.I.E. Project.

I'm trying to think of other touchstones from around that time (doesn't make sense to call them 'early virals'). My own referents are all loaded towards games and comics, though.

Slashdot injokes?
Bash.org?
JeffK?
Old Man Murray?
The concept of a webring?
Ranma 1/2 x Star Wars fanfiction?

I'm drawing a lot of blanks on <2001 internet. 'Course, I wouldn't have remembered Real Ultimate Power if the test hadn't prompted me. I had also forgotten about Oolong.

Geocities and Angelfire! People having personal websites! THE TACKIEST THING! I totally had a Geocities page and it was TERRIBLE and I posted my angsty teen poetry that I thought was really GOOD and DEEP and was actually TRITE and WHINY. I actually remember some of it and it was SO BAD. One poem began "Turned to nowhere, nothingness, bleak. Despair has come, the willows weep. A mermaid dies, an angel cries and flies with wings of feathery white." Also these poems featured many, many line breaks. To paraphrase David Sedaris, I thought that just because my pain was significant, my writing was significant too. This was Not the Case. I was sure this was like the greatest, most expressive poetry that ever happened and my friends either thought it was okay or were nicer than I deserved about it (I think mostly we were all just coping with depression and being teenage idiots).

Also maybe Forum2000?

I had some early internet pages (my Big Grand Idea was to compare the various free hosts by setting up a personal web-ring of sites on the various hosts, but I am often more of an Idea Guy than a Getting Things Done guy), but luckily no angsty poetry. I saved that for my journal (and damn, was it angsty and trite). And why did I end every entry with "Peace"? Seriously, young teenage me, what were you thinking?

And now I have another Big Idea: make a linear image/poster of the different eras of the internet, depicting the rise and fall of certain sites and memes, akin to a dinosaur poster I had as a kid.

JohnFromGR: My first website had a tilde in the URL.

This is still common on University sites, and I hadn't realized how archaic the practice was.

Also, Transformers, GI Joe and a Gem and the Holograms movie.

People born in the 80's now have a bit of spending money. Boomers are mostly past pop-culture spending. The nostalgia marketers will see you now.

Oh definitely. In non-stodgy internet zones, the term "90's kid" carries with it a tone of reverence. People are actively trying to recreate the styles of music and dress they remember as being unattainably cool when they were children. I've seen pale young people wearing burgundy lipstick. It's all down hill from here for me.

That era of the web, I remember switching browsers because the new one showed page backgrounds, alt.fan.pratchett where the author himself posted, which was amazing, every single new episode of The Simpsons from alt.tv.simpsons being declared WORST EPISODE EVER, games like Sissyfight, the ubiquity of AOL discs and CompuServe email addresses with all those numbers, thousands of different webrings for anything you could imagine, and of course the idea of downloading anything resembling a video on dialup was ludicrous.

And, yes, ubiquitous tildes in web addresses. Hell, we still typed the http:// because the address wouldn't work without it.
