I was the Duke of Hazzard. I lived it. Jerry Rushing inspired the 1975 movie Moonrunners (or Los Contrabandistas), which features Robert Mitchum's son and Spanky "Our Gang" McFarland and was the ur-text for the Dukes of Hazzard. "The characters in the show, Cooter, Uncle Jesse, Boss Hogg, Bo and Luke, and of course Daisy Duke are all based on real people from Jerry’s life." Rushing's car, Traveler, was named after General Lee's horse. [more inside]

Rushing's story may have also been the inspiration for this gang from The Warriors.

Steven Colbert did a hilarious segment on Ben "Cooter" Jones' call to boycott the current movie because it mocks the family values of the original show.

I love the fact that the Wikipedia entry is a word-for-word cut-and-paste from the Jerry Rushing Web page. Apparently, the idea of using Wikipedia as anything other than obvious self-promotion didn't occur here.

I feel a strong vindication in my instant dislike of the movie, two reviews have put it as the front runner for worst movie of the year.
