Obvious Foggot

Dear George, Thank you for your email. While I have no idea what a foggot is, I will assume it is a term of endearment and appreciate you taking time out from calculating launch trajectories or removing temporal lobe tumors to contact me with such. I have attached a signed photo as per your request. Regards, David. posted by hippybear (31 comments total)

This post was deleted for the following reason: We've seen his stuff a few times already and the whole Being A Clever Asshole schtick isn't really something that begs for more attention for something that isn't earth-shatteringly interesting. -- cortex

That's eerie. I was just checking out 27bslash6 a few minutes ago, wondering if there was anything new up there.

There wasn't.

Thorne has published material from the website as a book, The Internet is a Playground, which debuted last week on the NYT Paperback Bestseller list at #4.

The current fascination with online interaction is already beginning to show signs of wear. I give it another six months or so before people are bored of it and rediscover fun family activities like slip'n'slide and Jenga.

I'd suggest that the slip'n'slide needs to be brought out before 6 months have passed... They're hellish to use once autumn sets in.

This guy is more of an asshole than he is funny. Especially in the lost cat poster one.

this was delightful fun.

my favorite moment: ...no basis to the proposition that those least assured of their persuasions are the first to condemn others for theirs.

So it's wrong to call David Thorne a "foggot", but it's OK for David Thorne to make fun of his attacker's girlfriend for being fat and living in West Virginia?

(Though replying "Did she eat them?" when informed the girl's family were dead, was classic.)

I know a guy who was almost good enough to play guitar in Foggot, but some other guy got the gig.

West Virginia incest jokes AND fat girlfriend jokes. Way to keep it classy.

At first I only saw "George" and "foggot" and hoped for an entertaining letter from George Takei.

Just to forestall some of the usual outrage: these are pretty obviously fake. Some are funnier than others, but dude isn't (necessarily) as huge a prick as he appears.

Creating internet hoaxes without clearly identifying them as such doesn't necessarily make you less of a prick.

Well, that certainly puts "Slow Ride" and other hits in a whole new light!

If we're going to do this again, at least let's link to the earlier conversation in which David Thorne himself showed up and talked things over with everybody.

Overall it was pretty mean, but responding to the subject line "tarded" with the subject line "dneck" was pretty hilarious.

If these stupid things were real, that would be lame enough, but how colossally lame do you have to be to write fake stories about trolling people in order to make yourself look clever? Do we really need a new FPP every time this guy gets bored and decides to play "Watch Me Bat the Low-Hanging Fruit"?

Nice work, making fun of facial tatoos. Guess the Māori are beneath Mr Thorne.

I'd never really consumed the name David Thorne in any conscious way before today, although once I saw the spider thing I remembered reading about that.

I know MetaFilter is inherently distrusting, but I'd welcome actual proof showing this exchange didn't actually happen.

Anyway, if you really didn't like the post, take it to MeTa or FIAMO. I was amused enough to think about sharing it here, which I don't do with just everything that amuses me. So, there you go.

3 times wasn't enough?

I generally find Thorne's style of humor to be funny, but I'm pretty sick of the whole "he's an asshole/he's a comedian/he's an asshole comedian/wait I just got here and didn't read the rest of this thread yet but I wanted to say that guy is an asshole kthanks"

I know MetaFilter is inherently distrusting, but I'd welcome actual proof showing this exchange didn't actually happen.

I can't prove that something didn't happen. I can only wait for convincing evidence that something did happen.

It's pretty impressive how polarizing this guy's writing is. Look back through all the previous Thorne posts, all of which became train wrecks like this, and consider the mere fact of how many there are.

The guy is doing what he's trying to do quite well, I think.
