The Stranger does it right

The Stranger does it right Seattle's weekly Stranger paper created a powerful and eloquent cover image for this week's edition. Weekly papers had the challenge of producing an issue on deadline which would not be published until days after Tuesday's events, behind the flood of daily newspaper and TV coverage. How have your independent weeklies handled the coverage?

Ours (www.sevendaysvt.com) completely ignored it.

I also was impressed & moved by that image. from a distance, on the bus, it looked like a drawn outline, which was moving enough as it was. up close, when I realized those were cut out photos..... wow.

the tacoma reporter, on the other hand...jumped right on the "kill 'em all" bandwagon. oh well. sometimes I enjoy that wacky little rag, but they have some oddball politics. I never know when it's going to be lefty, right-wing, or libertarian.

It's similar to this one.

I do wish the Stranger had quickly renamed its "Election Death Squad" story, however.

Also worthy of note is the absence of a smart-ass tagline under The Stranger's banner this week. As I first picked up a copy of the issue, I had a instant of stomach-churning unsurity as to whether the staff -- which, let's face it, can be eschewingly self-conscious when it comes to over displays of sincerity -- would be able to resist putting something obliquely snarky.

In retrospect, it seems callous to not to have given them the benefit of the doubt. Nerverheless I have to admit I was relieved.

On the other hand, this may not have been the best week for The Stranger to debut it's new "Ask Osama!" column next to Last Days... :)

It's hardly an "independent weekly," but is anyone else appalled by the graphic on the front page of Salon.com right now? I've stashed a copy here in case they change it.

The cover of the Stranger is nice, but they have this running gag every week in the "Movie Times" section where they pick a currently running movie and use it as the caption of a photo not actually from the movie - like titling it "The Cell" but showing a picture of a ribosome instead of Jennifer Lopez.

... Anyway, I was sickened this week to see the picture of the plane go through the tower, captioned "Two Can Play At This Game."

You caught me, geegaw, I was tiptoeing around that one 'cause I was trying to emphasize the positive -- as in "at least they kept it off the cover."

But I had the same reaction as you. Which is a shame, because I love that gag -- it's one of only two things in The Stranger that can cause me to bark aloud. Even the photo for A.I. -- you know, with the rows of A1 steak sauce -- gave me a giggle for some reason.

(Full disclosure: the other thing is Wm T. Humphrey's column. Yes, I find this fact puzzling, too.)
