It seemed like most of them that had to check knew the artist, but not the song. I've had that happen as well, especially with stuff that's not strongly lyrical.

Not really weird, just a pretty understandable social convention. It's polite to indicate that the person you're talking to has your full attention, rather than drowning them out behind music in your ear.

Frankly, I'm always a little surprised when some stranger talks to me out in the world. I grew up in a big suburb and went to college in a small ruralish town and was SHOCKED when strangers would smile and say "hi" when passing. Really caught me off guard that first semester.

It's polite to indicate that the person you're talking to has your full attention, rather than drowning them out behind music in your ear.

It's also helpful if you're someone like me who struggles with parsing or attenuating multiple verbal streams, because it means you're less likely to be say something like "oh, Downward Spiral, I recently got back into NIN's older stuff and it's really fuck you like an animal I mean really great..."

Also, re: taking off the headphones unnecessarily, people do this whenever they want to pay attention to something. If I'm looking for a particular address while driving down an unfamiliar street, I'll turn the radio off...but it's not as though that will let me see more clearly.

I sort of assumed that the guy was holding up such a sign, you can see people looking off camera and down before they talk to him. I presume his chances of getting anyone to respond would be much diminished if he didn't have some kind of non-verbal prop, since most people with headphones might assume he was trying to hit them up for money or something similar if he was just accosting random passers-by.

I've spent the past month sorting through the close to 300 U2 remixes I snagged from various online sources a while back, so I have a quality, sorted set to hand out to people who are attending the U2 360 show with me and near me in the seating next weekend.

It's been mind numbing, but I'm nearly done. *whew*

It is so jarring talking to people in public! And I'm not even talking about strangers. I used to live in a big city and now I live in a very small one. I was wandering around, rocking out to my cheesy dance shuffle mix and carrying a giant pineapple that I just bought on a whim. I ran into my academic supervisor and his wife...and I lost all ability to function as a social being. I was struggling with my headphones and getting out of anonymous dance zone and of course he commented on the pineapple. I just couldn't think of anything to say. So I did what people here do. I talked about the weather. And how the momentary sunshine inspired me to buy this pineapple here (holds up fruit). That and I hoped it would be really sweet. And with that, I made my excuse about how I needed to go home and cut it up and find out. Shuffled off and put those headphones back in, returning to my private world where the sounds are louder than my head telling me what an idiot I am for not being able to handle the most basic of social routines.

When I go back and watch the video again, I find it oddly comforting to realise that many of these people aren't merely being distracted, but curious AND downright terrified because OMG SOCIAL INTERACTION AAHHHHH.

OK, now that I've actually watched the video, it was great! I especially loved the Frank Sinatra listener -- but shame on that one silly lady for being all "oh Kanye West I'm so embarrassed." (Meanwhile the Korn fan rides off into the evening, head high.) First of all, Kanye is a genius. Second, if a song gives you pleasure, it's just low to throw it under the bus like that for the sake of saving face on youtube. Tsk.

nice video. I especially liked how sometimes the song plays before the person answers the question. Also, I didn't expect the NPR clip to play, I thought that was a nice touch. And of course, I think people deserve bonus points when they answer the question in song, like the guy at 4:56 ("Big Punisher...still not a player, but you still a hater!")

Like many people I've got iPhone on random when I'm around. I also have a habit of downloading whole discographies or random albums. And most of the what I've been listening to lately sounds the same. So yeah I need to check.

I can almost always tell you what artist and album I'm listening to without looking at my player. Specific songs, though? Only if it's a favorite.

I often look at other people who are listening to music during my subway commute and think how interesting it would be to be able to randomly toggle through what other people in the same car are listening to and then try to guess which person is listening to what music. Somebody make an app for that and give me a modest 25% cut, please.

Last time someone asked me what I was listening to, I faltered. Since it wasn't as specific as "What song are you listening to?" I wasn't sure how to reply in a quick way. It was at a grocery store check-out line, and even though I was the only one there, I didn't want to geek out on music. "Well, it's kind of a blend with electronic music and instrumental hip-hop" could have worked, but I stammered "Uh, hip-hop."

Inside, I knew there was more, and I wanted to tell her "It's a great artist named Take, so it's a pain to find his music online. And the track is remixed by a crazy talented Japanese lady who goes by the name TOKiMONSTA, all one word, and all caps except the 'i' - and it's not 'monster,' it's 'monsta.' It's part of a remix album, which I just started listening to, and so far, it's fantastic. And the label's pretty good, too."

Currently listening to: Vieux Farka Touré - All The Same (featuring Dave Matthews, but in a small dose, which is OK with me).

From my perspective, you handled the most basic of social routines exactly like we all do.

You obviously are one of those folks who doesn't believe in the concept of "guilty pleasures." I can't be the only one who keeps Barbie Girl, Pac-Man Fever, and Breakdancing in my collection. (The latter maybe not so guiltily, but those first 2? C'mon ... Ace of Base is another ...)

This video was on reddit yesterday, and its creator made a few comments in the thread.

The guy on reddit who did it is username idlesense:

"Yeah I had a sign taped to a tripod. You can see certain people looking down at it."

He didn't say anything else interesting.
