MML: A guy dancing in his basement to an electro-swing song by Parov Stelar.

oh no is this a thing now?

It's not "oh no", it's "hells yes" because the world would be a better place if this was a thing everywhere.

What, criming in basements or the thing zamboni just did?

What's the song?

It's the title of the video.

Yeah, a bit of googling did it.

That arm spinning stuff is really cool. Bet he can draw a perfect freehand circle while dancing.

Jeez, I must live under a rock or something. That music was awesome! (goes to look for more)

This guy has amazing moves, makes me long to be a dancer. And yes, the music is great! Thanks for this... so cool it almost felt like Friday for a minute there.

There are some great suggestions for Electroswing music in an AskMe of mine from a while ago. Caravan Palace and Einheit and Gry are particularly good, IMO. I can also recommend the White Cotton Black Mink album for a mix of different artists. People in London (UK) should have a look at the Book Club near old street, which has Electroswing nights about once a month.

/slightly obsessed.

Why is Electroswing so popular with the makers of car commercials? Ford, Chrysler, Daimler have all used it a lot.

Because it combines nostalgia with pandering to the youth? (Also, catchy.)

Huh, he actually uses fairly basic dance moves, but uses them well. A few of them were late eighties hip-hop moves: The Adidas, The Kid & Play, The Running Man.

Mmmm, electroswing. I saw Caravan Palace play recently, and was shocked to learn that the samples used in their music are recorded by the band members themselves, who are highly skilled and passionate players. I went in expecting catchy danceable music, but didn't expect to see a guy shredding gypsy jazz guitar live. Earned my undying love, they did.

(also, they had to stop the show temporarily because the singer and a hundred or more people jumped into the shallow "decorative pond" separating the stage and the audience, resulting in basically a pool dance party. Maybe 10 feet from the PA and lighting. My friend and I were waiting for a reenactment of the climax of Gremlins 2, but alas.)

It's something you can learn, and IME doesn't have much to do with body type or anything like that.

Are you criming in the basement? Mixing up the medicine.

Any tips towards this? I love watching people who have what in drumming circles is called 'limb independence'; the ability to move one part of the body without getting sympathetic movements in other parts. I guess the classic example dance-wise is the Robot, where only specific joints are allowed to move along certain planes.

Are there exercises that dancers use to promote this sort of modular ability?

I have no idea what I just watched, but I know I like it.

Probably, but not that I know about in particular. Taking introductory classes in mime or indeed dance will help to develop better kinetic awareness and confidence. But making some space and time to just dance a lot to music you love in your own home is good too; the more you do it the easier it gets. I took some tai chi lessons several years ago and that was awesome on multiple levels. The most graceful movements are the simplest and most economical ones, and those often turn out to be circular rather than linear. Also, this is something you can do all the time - walking, riding the bus, doing chores, whatever.

I don't want to pass myself off as an expert in this. I just chimed in because I used to feel very clumsy and uncoordinated, and remember how crap that felt. But I grew out of it in my mid-late 20s.
