Perry the Denier

The flat earth society gains one more. In NH, we continue to "bird dog" the Republican candidates about global warming. In June, Romney responded to a question about global warming. Today, Jim Rubens asked Perry the following question...

"You have written that global warming is a “contrived phony mess that is falling apart under its own weight," and that earth is “experiencing a cooling trend.”

The National Academy of Sciences, an independent body of our nation’s most esteemed scientists, has concluded that fossil fuel combustion is the primary cause of global warming. Every month since 1985, earth surface temperatures have exceeded the 20th century average. The hockey stick.

If observed scientific data and the National Academy of Sciences are both wrong on an issue involving thousands and scientists and as prominent as global warming … does this not call into question the entire science discovery process that is the basis for America’s status as an advanced technological society?"

1) The entire Republican slate is a buncha freaks.
2) This isn't a very good post for MetaFilter.

Hello there, person with a great name. The response:

GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry told New Hampshire voters Wednesday that he does not believe in man-made climate change, calling it a scientific theory that has not been proven.
"I think we're seeing almost weekly, or even daily, scientists that are coming forward and questioning the original idea that man-made global warming is what is causing the climate to change," the Texas governor said on the first stop of a two-day trip to the first-in-the-nation primary state.
He said some want billions or trillions of taxpayer dollars spent to address the issue, but he added: "I don't think from my perspective that I want to be engaged in spending that much money on still a scientific theory that has not been proven and from my perspective is more and more being put into question."

P.S. When you paste from that site, it tries to sneak a URL in at the bottom. Naughty, naughty JavaScript.

I could be wrong but I think the "hockey stick" is a visual cue towards statistical analysis being
represented by a sharp up-swing on a line graph. Ya know, it looks kinda like a hockey stick.

I think "the hockey stick" means "the h*ll", you know -- H-E-double hockey sticks.

odinsdream: ""The hockey stick."

What?

That refers to the so-called hockey stick graph.

Are we going to have a new FPP every time a Republican presidential candidate says there's too much government spending on something?

The article doesn't quote Perry saying global warming isn't happening or isn't caused by humans. He just says he thinks these are open questions and that we're spending too much money trying to find the answer.

"Andrew Dessler, a professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University responds that Perry is wrong:

'There are dozens of credible atmospheric scientists in Texas at institutions like Rice, UT, and Texas A&M, and I can confidently say that none agree with Gov. Perry's views on the science of climate change. This is a particularly unfortunate situation given the hellish drought that Texas is now experiencing, and which climate change is almost certainly making worse.'"

The Flat Earth Society is a society dedicated to the notion that the earth is flat, not round.

As far as I can tell, Rick Perry is not a member.

More and more, I think we really need to get Obama reelected because I don't want to sift through four years of posts about the dumb things President Perry said.

On the other hand, I'm kind of looking forward to people remembering that they're against war and in favor if civil liberties.

Why is it OK to threadshit in politics threads but not others? If you don't care if a Republican is elected, just move on.

This unsurprising revelation only reinforces the fact that Rick Perry is the second most horrifying Republican candidate in the field at this moment. There is a difference between dedicated conservative opinion and reckless disregard for science. The latter is a disgrace to the Republican party and the United States in general. One can hold deep right-wing convictions without denying heavily studied results with proof of tangible impact.
