Do Kangaroos really have favorite humping branches? THATS AWESOME AND ADORABLE
posted by Blasdelb at 5:19 PM on November 14, 2011

It would be better if the animals got together and smacked the mic out of the narrators hand.

note, there is no actual animal violence in the video, just lots of emu vs kangaroo posturing.
posted by Blasdelb at 5:23 PM on November 14, 2011

Maybe they should put a few more humping branches (??) in the enclosure so everyone can have a favorite.

Mostly analogous to what I imagine MetaTalk would look like in a zoo

I wouldn't have guessed it, but based on this video evidence, my cats might be part kangaroo. That whole, hump-something-and-then-go-bounding-off-careening-clumsily-into-everything-and-then-come-racing-back is totally their move.

And taking on an animal vastly bigger? That's my Siamese all over.

(That bit at 1:51, where the kangaroo gets right next to the emu and puts its fists up? That gave me my biggest smile of the day.)

Something tells me that if emus could talk they would be the greatest trash-talkers ever. Such sass.

Kangaroo vs. Emu: Nobody Wins!

Why did I watch that non-event?

...I didn't know emu necks could do that.

I really hope there is a second video where that Kangaroo boxes down all those emus, or beats them to a pulp with his humping branch...because I HATE emus. Ahhh, just look at how awful they are! Why are they!??!?

Why did I watch that non-event?

We must have gotten links to different videos, because the one I saw had crazy humping, leaping, bounding, neck contortions, gang intimidation, domination displaying, and a tough little scrapper that wouldn't back down.

Or as I like to call it... "Friday night."

That emu is voguing, despite its little vestigial wing stumps.

I'm pretty sure he just want the kangaroo to put down his icky spunk branch and pay attention to him.

Let's stand as close as possible to these two dangerous animals who want to fight.

obligatory yt .

Thanks, Jessamyn. I had been listening to guests on the News Quiz make cracks about Rod Hull and Emu for yonks but I never did know what they meant.

Also the emu reminded me of the fire puppets in Labyrinth.

Diablevert..Yes! I was just trying to sum up how I thought I would be rooting for the kangaroo, but then the emu's sweet moves really won me over in a Henson kind of way.

For the record, the pronunciation is E-mew and NOT E-moo.

I thought the roo was pretty small. It would be a fairer fight if it was a big red. That way either of them could eviscerate the other with a single swipe of the paw.

..single swipe of the paw leg or foot..

I love how the emu is all sassy with his neck, like "OH NO YOU DIN'T!" and the kangaroo is all like "stfu and let me hump my branch, mate!"

I guess it probably would be a good idea to stand back and use a fairly long telephoto lens.   eeep.

I find it very difficult to take emus seriously.
posted by xbonesgt at 8:11 PM on November 14, 2011 [1 favorite]

There is no way I would get in an enclosure with either of those animals. I once saw a kangaroo kick a man through a M1 Abrams main battle tank and it is also true what they say about an emus claws being able to create tears in the fabric of space-time. That is why Australian clothing fashion is tethered to the mid-90s. It isn't that we aren't aware of G Star Raw jeans, it's just the emus won't let us.

(Stay the hell away from cassowaries too. Dingos are okay though provided you don't roll your infants in jam before you set them out in the bush to play.)

(Also the thing in movie Basket Case is actually a koala in prosthetics. Those were not stunts, nor were its screams in any way manipulated in post-production. Koalas actually literally sound like that.)

when you witness/capture something with some friends present you'd better all just all shut up because god forbid some blog on the internet dislikes the sound of your voice, right?

you wouldn't want to interact with what's occurring right in front of your face right? or comment on it to your friends? in fact don't acknowledge at all other than hitting record, you wouldn't want to spoil rando metafilter commenter's viewing experience with your "ugly mouth". they're just going to judge you super harshly and detest you based on 5 sentences over 2:00 of video.

And this is why we eat the animals on our coat of arms. They can't even run a bloody fight club properly.

Where the fuck were they that no-one told them to run away from the crazy fighting dangerous animals?

Jesus wept that was poor judgement. I wanted them simultaneously wiped out and winning a Darwin Award for their stupidity.

As demonstrated by this video, humans have only survived this planet by being too stupid to run away when it is clearly too dangerous to stick around, and that pays off big occasionally.

self link - emus can too fly. Please don't be too perturbed. You don't tend to see them hanging around town so much.
