An armpit? A fuzzy dude-chest? I still want my giant Totoro tummy to rest upon.

When I hug someone I look over their shoulder, if not over their head, not into their chest. Who are all these huggy giants?

These people are clearly hugging webcams. It looks awkward because it is awkward.

I think I actually knew one of those people from NYC. Weird. Is there a list of who they are?

So many people are masturbating to this right now.

That was okay, but when I really need to be cheered up, I watch a few dozen replays of these two videos.

I just got out of the shower and am sitting here in front of my computer sans clothes. Having random internet people come up to hug me was extremely unsettling.
posted by phunniemee at 4:35 PM on December 2, 2011 [3 favorites]

I'm all set to hug my webcam. The camera is on, and I'm positioning myself in front it. I can see myself on my screen, but I can't see you. So I'm just going to have to approach the cam and give myself a hug. But I'm thinking of you.

Please don't hug me. It sickens me.
posted by Kandarp Von Bontee at 4:42 PM on December 2, 2011 [1 favorite]

Okay so the last time I was at Dolores Park I saw a dog take a blue shit. Like, bright semi-gloss latex exterior paint blue. And the dude walking the dog tried to laugh it off saying, Oh, he must have eaten a condom. Nope! It'd take about nineteen boxes of condoms to be that blue, but it didn't because your dog is an alien and you know it.

I still want my giant Totoro tummy to rest upon.

If and when we get to some Singularity-ish ipod-jack-in-skull point, I am so having a Totoro to rest upon.

And a personal attendant named...Astrid.

The first one (and a lot of those other hugs) are recognizably from San Francisco.

I'd give out with a big hug from Teh City, too...sigh...but it seems my computer tells me my webcam security is currently set to practicing abstinence, e.g. "Safe Hex."

I feel kinda bad cause I was just watching The Walking Dead before I clicked on the nicest place on the internet and I might have just shot a bunch of people.

These people would NOT be giving me this many hugs if they knew how gassy I am tonight. Hoo boy.

(That was uplifting in a way I did not expect, which is kind of worrisome from an "am I really lonely?" perspective.)
posted by Turkey Glue at 5:48 PM on December 2, 2011 [2 favorites]

Don't touch me! Nothing gives you that right!

But seriously, I fucking love this. So wonderful.

And for all of you reading this, I'm choosing to stay in on this Friday night instead of going to a party, because I just feel like spending my night with MeFites instead. Hugs for all of you! I love you all!

Funny that this "Do you need a hug" post came right after the "This is how you die" post. UNICORN CHASER!
posted by shortyJBot at 7:01 PM on December 2, 2011 [2 favorites]

No, this is just a simulacrum of what a hug is, and therefore, far inferior, ergo, making me miss a real hug that much more.
posted by Relay at 7:15 PM on December 2, 2011

this is like porn for emotions

if you never got hugged before, or if you never got hugged in the last 10 years, and this makes you remember how it feels to get hugged, and you appreciated that, then you know where I'm at on this
posted by nervousfritz at 7:49 PM on December 2, 2011 [5 favorites]

By all rights I should hate that song but I think it's adorable and charming. It's the last track on My Brightest Diamond's most recent album All Things Will Unwind, for anyone who cares.

Slowly she pressed herself to him. He felt the stiffening points of her nipples and the firm swell of her pert breasts and she gently wrapped him in her bare arms. His breathing came a little faster; became a little more irregular as he lightly took one wrist and guided her hand to... damn damn damn DAMN! Oh internet, why does it friggin' ALWAYS come to this??!

OK, hugs are great, and I internetly hugged twenty people: twenty young people.

Y'know, people over 50 like to hug, too. Unfortunately, we are not so photogenic.

I miss handshakes.
posted by Cold Lurkey at 9:13 PM on December 2, 2011 [1 favorite]

Kozad- I saw several people over fifty. A couple older white guys, a Middle-Easterner, and an Asian lady. Maybe you didn't watch far enough.

Also, this seems to be more of a "submit a video" kind of thing, rather than people going out and recording. So it'd make sense for most of the videos to be of the younger generations-they're the kind who spend most of their time on the internet, and would find/care about this site.

Overall, I found it pleasant, if not a bit sad. Maybe it's the slow pace of music. Maybe I just really need a hug.

If you don't have flash installed, then this link just goes to a completely black page that says "the nicest place on the internet" in the corner.

Which I honestly thought was the point, at first. "Nah," i thought to myself, "this is only nicer than like 97% of the internet."

I got a buffered hug.
Now I'm depressed.
posted by llc at 9:43 PM on December 2, 2011

It was ok, at first, or even more than ok. And for a moment it made me happier. But all those people were skinny people. I'm fat and I'm not ok. And I know those people don't want to hug fat people. It's ok. I don't want skinny people to feel bad. I just wish I was ok too, and skinny.

posted by arcticseal at 10:47 PM on December 2, 2011

I got major warm-fuzzies from this. Everyone needs a hug. The essence of an anonymous hug, well meant, is that someone somewhere wants you to be well. That's what I got and that's what I'll take.
posted by wallabear at 11:25 PM on December 2, 2011 [2 favorites]

I read an article about a survey some researchers did, where they asked people what they were thinking about while hugging:

Women think about friendship, security, companionship, love, etc.

Men think about boobs.

(I wish I was making this up.)
posted by MexicanYenta at 12:29 AM on December 3, 2011 [4 favorites]

Max Udargo, I'm fat and I'll hug you. I've also been hugged by people of all sizes and I'm gonna guess these people are hugging the internet, which is a great spectrum of all sizes.

I'm pretty large, soft and pillowy myself. When it comes to hugging, I've always considered this an advantage, not a drawback. Probably because the best childhood hugs were from my plump grandmother. Anyway, I really loved this post. My favorite of the day.
posted by marsha56 at 5:44 AM on December 3, 2011

The site is terribly gray to be the nicestbplace on the internet. Also, the way the quick edit style of the video with all those people coming at me was unsettling, and I'm a hugger.
