Yeah seem like a hell of a lot of work for a lame joke. Although yeah after reading longsleeves comment, yeah could be some SEO bullshit. Although Google will spell-check everything anyway so it won't work very well if it is.
I've become pretty cynical about that sort of thing - stuff that's only out there because someone thought it would make effective spam -- it's even worse when it's not even directed at a real person, but trying to exploit some glitch in an AI. posted by delmoi at 5:24 AM on December 27, 2011

Not that much work if you come up with an auto-misspeller. (Which in itself can't be that hard. It's not like there's One Right Way to misspell.)
And I don't think it has to be SEO. Just a "learn to spell" search hit. If you search for "catle" you'll find Wikipeetia and some spelling tips. Nice.
As for "Google will spell-check everything anyway" a) not everyone uses Google and b) for those increasingly annoyed at Google "helpful" "correction" of spelling, there's now the option to turn that off, I believe. posted by DU at 5:31 AM on December 27, 2011

I read a funny comment recently about companies whose clevrly spelled product name makes them ungoogleable. Imagine if Google rewrote "Flickr" to be "flicker", for instance. posted by Nelson at 9:05 AM on December 27, 2011 [1 favorite]
