That's insane! As in, that is literally what insanity sounds like. posted by bicyclefish at 11:33 PM on December 29, 2011 [5 favorites]
Tomorrow I am looking into having my firstborn child genetically engineered to have 7 fingers per hand in order to play that. posted by Ad hominem at 11:38 PM on December 29, 2011 [2 favorites]
I am glad Nyan Cat is finally getting some recognition after languishing for so long, overlooked and unheralded. The recent performance at Carnegie hall was a revelation and truly a high water mark. The recent rediscovery of The Nyan Variations has also been a boon to Nyan scholars around the globe. posted by Ad hominem at 11:50 PM on December 29, 2011 [9 favorites]

You do know that every last orchestra member died of exhaustion during that performance, don't you? That kind of tragedy shouldn't be celebrated. posted by Burhanistan at 11:53 PM on December 29, 2011 [4 favorites]
I was hoping Nobuo Uematsu would be in the variations for some reason. posted by Mister Fabulous at 11:56 PM on December 29, 2011
I would sincerely like to read a few words of educated musical analysis on the Nyan Cat tune; to my ears it has a genuinely interesting melody in the way it repeatedly sort of pushes ahead harder and sooner than you'd expect. posted by Anything at 2:01 AM on December 30, 2011 [1 favorite]
If you liked this then you might also like Hamelin's - Solfeggietto a Cinque for player piano - which is the other piece of music that is being parodied according to the author. posted by rongorongo at 3:40 AM on December 30, 2011 [1 favorite]

I am hoping to finally see the resurrection of the 18th C masterpiece Die Wohltemperierte Nyan-Katze, although I think it would be OK to maintain the modern sprightly poptart body instead of the largish dumpling that Bach reportedly envisioned. posted by GenjiandProust at 5:38 AM on December 30, 2011 [7 favorites]

Wow, a little random link wandering and I end up with Hamelin's "Circus Galop" which is impossible to play. It can probably only be played on a synthesizer, and this video of the music synched to the sheet music is hilarious. It isn't clear to me how this was intended to be performed, apparently it is scored for two player pianos. I don't know how you'd sync them. I suppose you could sync a couple of Disklaviers or Pianocorders or something, if you wanted an actual live performance on non-synthesized instruments. posted by charlie don't surf at 8:02 AM on December 30, 2011
Man, this thread/link is bringing up tons of sweet linkes...
I think I want to hear Death Waltz sequenced/played by Tom Jenkinson/Squarepusher. I could hear some sweet synth/bass lines, in fact, I feel I hear a lot of Hello Meow era (ha! Meow! Nyan Cat! Ha!)
I also found this little gem the other night... Igorrr's Unpleasant Sonata which the comments point out is based on Rameau's Cyclopes. posted by symbioid at 8:35 AM on December 30, 2011
Also, I like Oesophage De Tourterelle by igorrr more than the cyclopes one... based upon Chopin's étude op. 10 no. 2 (again - according to comments, I don't know jack shit but that I like it). posted by symbioid at 8:39 AM on December 30, 2011

This doesn't really fit the bill in terms of nyan/midi/playerpiano, but it is a swell piano oddity: D.J.Lebowitz, Holiday in Cambodia. posted by ovvl at 4:06 PM on December 30, 2011
