What do you do when your viola recital gets interrupted by someone in the audience getting a call on their cellphone? Improvise.

Note that he is not totally improvising.

Musicians have been doing this for some time.

That was pretty charming, honestly, not so much because it was an original idea but the mixture of gratitude and embarrassment on Kmit's face after the applause.

See, I preferred the look on his face as he's making the decision to play the little impromptu encore...

That was cute. I liked his expression while playing, too.

Oh boy, is this to be the violist joke thread? What do they do when a violist dies?

So has it been determined if this is a viral marketing attempt by Nokia?

At first I thought this was a double, but then realize idiopath posted it in the other 'mobile phone ringing during a performance' FPP.

We should be so lucky.

I saw Jake Armerding do this once. Took us all a few seconds before we caught on.

cashman: "So has it been determined if this is a viral marketing attempt by Nokia?"

I don't think it is. The ringtone is monophonic, from a very old or very cheap device. Also this was filmed in a synagogue, there are religious symbols in the back. Not saying that it is not staged in any way, but if it was, I think it wasn't by Nokia (disclaimer: I work for Nokia).

Well played, Lukáš Kmit! Well played, sir!

Also, I would like his version as my new ring tone.

Please extinguish all violas before the performance.

I want that improved violin version as a ring tone now.

There's already an open thread about necrophilia.

Let it be known that if, in some strange parallel universe in which I didn't have the common sense and decency to silence my phone before a solo performance I would immediately commit seppuku if this were to happen.

I always keep an emergency falling-on sword with me just in case.

Oh good, a plate, here are my beans --- I totally love the subtlety of that, the way the repeat is at once and expression of irritation and an improptu demonstration of the skill which renders the musician so deserving of attention and respect in the first place

While this is cute, it is not the correct response to this type of behavior.

The correct response is to beat the offender to death with their phone.

Wow, I haven't heard the Nokia ringtone in ages! I love that waltz.

To be fair, the clip was rather short. Maybe he did that afterwards.

To more applause.

I like this a lot, but I have become skeptical. The ringing starts at the exact end of a movement, and he seemed fairly unsurprised and suspiciously well prepared. Still cute even if it was a set-up. Audience seemed to lie it, so no harm done.
