Dudes I know it ain't all maple syrup and and poutine in Canada, but there is still a crazy ass difference in the levels and frequency of police brutality between the US and Canada.

Like all the people here who are thinking "must be fake" think so because we reasonably expect anyone in that situation in the US to be unconscious and have like a kilo of heroin planted on them before they could finish a single verse.

In all seriousness, the cops around here (I live in Canada) are more likely to offer you a ride home if you're drunk, rather than throw you in the drunk tank, unless you're really causing a lot of trouble. They want to get you off the street. They don't necessarily want to deal with processing you and filling out a bunch of paperwork.

I could remind you about what happened in Toronto during the G20 summit. I could tell you about the acquaintance of mine who got thrown to the ground, beaten with a nightstick, and charged with assaulting an officer and resisting arrest because he didn't get out of a cab fast enough. I could show you this video of cops assaulting a 15-year-old girl and leaving her tethered to the door of her holding cell for hours because she was insufficiently respectful. I could point to this story about the RCMP refusing to investigate "numerous allegations of excessive force, racial profiling, and abuse of authority" in a single town in the BC Interior. I could mention Robert Dziekanski, or Ian Bush, who was shot in the back of the head while in police custody, or Jeff Berg, who was beaten to death by Vancouver police in a back alley. Hell, I could tell you about how I was spied on by the RCMP because I volunteer at a left-wing bookstore.

Yeah, cops up here aren't as paramilitarized at they are in the US (at least not yet). But they aren't exactly saints.

So a couple years ago, a great big group of 50+ of us interns decided to take a weekend camping trip. We sat around the campfire drinking, and so naturally we wanted to sing campfire songs. Only problem was that it turned out that we didn't actually know any songs. We literally could not finish a single song, either due to not knowing the words or just plain giving up. And we tried a lot of songs, ranging from "American Pie" to, embarrassingly, "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."

That evening, the only song we actually managed to sing completely through was Bohemian Rhapsody, which just poured out of us without hesitation or difficulty. There's something frickin' magical about that song.

Also, the lyric "open up your eyes and see." And "We will not let him go."

I know there are police abusing power to a greater or lesser extent pretty much anywhere there are police, but where I live in Texas, it would be pretty much fully expected that this would get you beaten if you didn't stop after being threatened with a beating, and maybe even then.
