Are Tilda Swinton and David Bowie the same person?

Katherine Mathilda "Tilda" Swinton (previously) and David Robert Jones (previously) are both known for their androgynous good looks and enigmatic presence. If you elongate Bowie's neck a bit and make him smile, he'll turn into Tilda. In fact, she may be slated to play the rock legend himself in an upcoming rock-and-roll trilogy.

It would be a better fit to compare Tilda with C3P0. Still, East is East and West is West and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does.

i knew the first link would be a tumblr as soon as I read the sentence. I move the stars for no one.

Clearly they are the same person. Or she is his sister. Or daughter. Or his little brother.

It's fascinating to me that there's this cultural edge that orbits around Tilda (Justin Bond, etc.) and yet she seems so far removed from those scenes, being a product of distant, dusty royalty. She's like one of those nonlinear strange attractors that falls into a mysterious orbit that attracts the creative, for no apparent reason other than her general androgynous beauty. Fashion is inexplicable that way, I suppose.

Short answer: Yes with an "if"; long answer: No with a "but"

Bowie was ambivalently gendered. Tilda is ambivalently human.

They are both examples of why we need more awesomely gender-ambiguous and/or androgynous public figures and/or celebrities and therefore regardless of how much they are alike I support this tumblr.

70's, 80's, 90's or current Bowie?

happy Bowie? Depressed Bowie?

How about the Bowie that brought coke to Iggy when he was cooped up in an "institution"

When people lambasted him for appearing with Muppets (for god's sakes) in Labyrinth, all I could think was.. well that's a step up for him. (and I kind like most of Bowie's music)

Swinton is probably just a fictionsuit for year-5372 Hyper²³GrantMorrison. Bowie, I'm not really sure, and it's probably not wise to poke too much into the issue.

Tilda Swinton is so f'ing hot it blows my mind.

Bowie? Bit of a wanker, really. But I think this performance is one of his best.

Only tangentially related, but this was Tilda Swinton's great-grandmother.

I think David Bowie may have posed in that same gown at some point during the Hunky Dory period.

No, but I'd probably watch them make out with each other.

What I would like to see is Tilda Swindon ripped apart violently, then seeing her gurgling white foam and revealing herself to be an Alien-style artificial human. Then you wouldn't feel as bad that she got ripped apart (as she has no soul), and you can just hook her head up to a car battery and continue the conversation. Her new lover could do an interesting multi-media project involving her foam-vomiting disembodied android head.

100% true story: I went to the hair salon a few weeks ago. All the hair was to come off. What remained was going from very dark brown to light peachy-white blonde. I looked up at my friend the barber and I asked him to make me look like a cross between David Bowie in the late 70s and Tilda Swinton. He shrugged and said "same difference" and began glopping the bleach onto my head.

No, she's the Prime Minister of Australia.

Tilda Swinton, on the other hand, seems to be some sort of actress.

David Bowie and David Bowie aren't even the same person.

It's based on an old French tune called 'Bowie est un autre'.

My first thought on seeing the title of this article:

"Tilda Swanson? I dunno who that is, but they should have just used the chick from "Liquid Sky. She looked exactly like..."

Oh.

Never mind! Proceed as planned.

Tilda Swinton has a badass foundation to help kids learn about film. It's called the 8 1/2 Foundation. Sign your kid up. Sign your niece up. Sign your nephew up. Sign up that weird kid down the street who has her head in the clouds all day long.

I once met her, she wanted to talk to my kid at an event. She was as normal as could be and just talked a lot about her own kids. And gardening, of all things. I think she plays the hand that was dealt her, in terms of her looks, because she loves film and wants to act. But I don't think she's all that etherial and otherworldly, she just looks that way. And of course she gets photographed and styled that way all the time. So she rolls with it.

Tilda Swinton is so f'ing hot it blows my mind.

One of the many narrative problems in The Beach was that we were asked to feel sorry for Leonardo diCaprio after Tilda Swinton had used him for sex.

I do not pity you, sir.

Steven Moffat, apparently, since he seems to be a wee bit misogynist.

Tilda Swanson

So now I'm imagining Parks & Rec with Ron Swanson married (in-universe) to Tilda Swinton. Thanks for that. DAY=BLOWN.

Are Tilda Swinton and David Bowie the same person?

Bah! This theory fails to account for Benedict Cumberbatch.

The most elegant explanation is that they're all infiltrators from Atlantis. Donovan tried to warn us, but we were too dazzled by the nacreous complexions and non-Euclidean cheekbones to take heed.

Tilda Swinton was the only reason to see the Narnia movie, and by far the best reason to see Constantine.

If I had my choice of physical appearance, I'd pick her.
posted by Foosnark at 7:29 AM on April 17, 2012

Tilda Swinton's been rocking my world since Orlando. And, yep, best thing in Constantine (though Peter Stormare was pretty great too).

I read once that any English person (who isn't a recent immigrant) has a 1 in 4 chance of being traceably related to any other English person... so maybe David Bowie and Tilda Swinton had the same elf grandpa.

Anybody else think it's cheating when they use one where Tilda is deliberately made up like Bowie, as in this one?
posted by Lentrohamsanin at 8:41 AM on April 17, 2012

It's not "Swinton." It's SWINTON.

Or. St. Tilda, if you prefer: "If more people were like Tilda Swinton, what a better world this would be. She looks people straight in the eye. She levels. She notices and cares about them--not just the big shots, but everyone. She still corresponds with Hilde Back, the 83-year-old Swedish woman who was the heroine of the great documentary "A Small Act" at Ebertfest 2011. She personally helps haul a trailer across the north of Scotland so that movies can be exhibited in towns without cinemas. She is formidably intelligent and forthright. She has a good heart. She freshens my faith in the cinema."

As this is likely my only chance to brag about my brief time working in the movie industry: I got to spend a week on-set with Ms Swinton, and she was unerringly sweet and nice to everyone. She was also even more elfin in person.
