Maybe it's a nostalgia thing? Yeah it's scripted, but most of the humor is of the "oh my god, that's EXACTLY what my dad would say" type.

Does "smoking tobeys" mean anything to the Picksburt-ites out there? A friend's mom is lovingly incoherent sometimes, and she's talked about smoking some kind of plain old plant (the tobeys) like a cigarette/cigar.
