As with all my new pets, I gently bit each kitten on the face. This is how I let my animals know that I am now their mother.

As I've always said, cool people are cat people. Dog owners are in constant need of approbation.

I can never get enough of Freddie Mercury and his cats. I wish someone would paint my cats onto a vest for me.

Dog owners are in constant need of approbation.

The very first post on MetaFilter was of people's cats. The biggest meme ever created on the Internet is pictures of cats. If that counts as a "constant need of approbation" by cat owners, I do not know.

That you have persisted in your horrible misapprehension for some time in no way alters its fundamental erroneousness. So there.

I'm sure it's a sweet kitty, but oh my goodness. Billy Corgan's cat will haunt your dreams....

If that (doesn't?) counts as a "constant need of approbation" by cat owners, I do not know.

Sorry, stbalbach, I should have clarified. Dog owners need the constant approbation of their dogs, not other humans. Mostly.

That you have persisted in your horrible misapprehension for some time in no way alters its fundamental erroneousness. So there.

I refute that thusly, in the words of R. Heinlein, "Where cat is, is civilization."

From that link, "You are not civilized without a cat."

"Where cat is, is civilization."
No, just means you've got rats in your granary.
Which you could work up to a metaphor for civilisation, I suppose, but will always be seen as a retrogression from the happy days when our free ancestors roamed the savannah in almost preternatural unspoken concert with their noble canine hunting companions, and not a litter tray in sight.

But, yeah, cats are kind of dumb. I mean, they chose to hang around people. They found the biggest meanest horriblest assholes around and decided "Hey, I want to be friends with them."

I mean, there are plenty of animals that hang around us for food. But cats are actually stupid enough to trust us. Idiots, seriously.

Indulging in the approbation of cats is not the same thing as needing approbation.

Nah, you've got it all wrong. Prior to cats domesticating us, we were dorky dog companions, running around, sniffing each other's butts and eating cat poo. After our domestication, which seemed almost too easy to the cats, they barely acknowledge us, let alone trust us.

For some reason, all the cats that I have ever had have chosen to express their "being friends with me" and "trust" with glances of sheer contempt.

I felt like that cat selection was a little on the nose for Tilda. Alexander Skarsgard's, however, was totally unexpected.

I think this needs to be repeated: I gently bit each kitten on the face. This is how I let my animals know that I am now their mother.

Thank you, Martha.

Cats are our friends. Dogs are our slaves.

My big problem with dogs is that they are so eager to please. I prefer a pet that sort of hates me sometimes. It makes the cuddly times so much more meaningful.

Cats are our friends. Dogs are our partners.

They won't be partners until they learn to dispose of their own poop. Until then, they are dependents.

item: Keith Richards looks like he is not happy about holding the little kitten in his hand.

Of course he wasn't. The little guy just swallowed the last of Keith's stash, and nobody but nobody feels good about having to slice open a kitten's soft little belly.
Keith's no sociopath.

He'll wait until it poops the stash out, and then eat it.

I think this needs to be repeated: I’ve been so happy with their company that I decided to call their breeder, Pam Rutan Dillmuth of Top Shelf Persians, who delivered last week, two adorable, fluffy, playful, and curious Persian kittens.

Fuck you, Martha
