I get it in Canada, and it's glorious.

WARNING: Link leads to full screen HD video. Expect nothing less. Fallon gets it.

Whoa, I don't know who either of the singers are and it's still weird for me to see The Roots as a backup band, but that was actually pretty excellent.

The live rendition of the backwards ending bit really made me happy. Also Maya's commitment to really hitting the guttural and falsetto beats at full intensity.

Maya Rudolph was a member of Saturday Night Live's cast. She's also the daughter of Minnie Ripperton, which means I will PUNCH THE HELL OUT OF ANYONE WHO SAYS ANYTHING OTHER THAN THAT SHE IS A SAINT.

I never watch Jimmy Fallon because I can't stand him so I hadn't seen this.
So awesome.
I laughed out loud at the backwards part.
Maya Rudolph is just so fucking great, always.

I saw this on the episode, as someone who rarely watches any non-Daily Show late night, and thought it was going to be a joke, and really was pleasantly surprised (like "hey, dude, come see this awesomeness")

But I'm an unapologetic Maya Rudolph fan boy. Loving her is easy because she's beautiful ...do do do do do spoon...

Wow. They even did the ending -- singing backwards:
""Hello, how are you? I'm fine 'cause I know that the Lord is coming soon. Coming, coming soon."

I prefer hearing a more feminine voice sing this, so I'm sticking with Prince.

Nice song, so-so rendition. I give it a six.

Now there's a song I never expected to see performed on broadcast TV. Love Maya Rudolph!

This is the all-time greatest Prince cover song. Maya Rudolph is a goddam powerhouse.

The best part, Prince hates it when people cover his songs.

Kind of a boring performance, tbh. Maya Rudolph has charisma, but she isn't showing it there.

I LOVES this.

We need more fierce women covering Prince's sly, sexy, sleazy songs.

Darling Nikki ruined my tweenhood. I was all excited to go see Prince in concert, I think at age 12, and my mom wasn't so sure if that was a good idea. She'd heard concerts were places for older kids and maybe Prince was a little adult for me? She didn't know. So she asked me to play her a song. So I played her Darling Nikki. That was the end of any hope of going to the concert and my life was ruined for at least six weeks.

To this day I still don't know if "masturbating with a magazine" implies mechanical action or reading.

Nelson: my parents took me to see the purple rain tour in 1985 when I was ten. It was amazing. Well, what I saw of it when my mom wasn't covering my eyes.

Princess is apparently "a thing". There's more than a few videos of them performing available online. Here's a video of them (yes, again with The Roots) with horrible sound doing Purple Rain.

The longer I'm alive, the more convinced I am that literally anything is possible musically if you have The Roots backing you up.

This put a huge smile on my face. Maya Rudolph is great. I used to listen to Darling Nikki before I went out on the weekend to psych myself up for raunchy dancefloor grindage.

Are their outfits supposed to make them look like the French and Saunders on AbFab or is that a coincidence?

I don't know about the trench coat that Maya is wearing, but Gretchen is dressed like either Wendy or Lisa from The Revolution, can't remember which one.

The trenchcoat is the same one Prince is wearing on the "Dirty Mind" album cover .

Did anyone do the other PR songs? I'd love to hear, say, Ryan Adams tackle "Beautiful People."

Wow that link to Prince in a trenchcoat and black bikini underwear...somehow I missed that album cover as a pre-teen in Canada.

Robyn covering Jack U Off: album ragtime version,
live almost punk version.

The album cover of Lovesexy also shown at that link got a teacher at my (nominally Christian) high school in a bit of bother, as he had a poster of it in his classrooms and some parents (mildly) objected; so it got covered up with a figleaf...

Ok. now please don't come over and stomp on me but there is something about Ms Rudolph's expressiveness that signals to me that this is a satire. (I'm glad I read the comments first)
posted by sammyo at 4:53 AM on September 23, 2012

I get what you're saying but I think "satire" implies something that isn't there. I think the look is from "extreme tribute!"
