I'm wondering how they set up the microphones for that. Conductive mics on the ice? They don't really explain. posted by sixohsix at 5:35 AM on October 5, 2012 [1 favorite]

Hats off to Flapjax for yet another amazing, inspiring, musical post. (On second thought, keep those hats on, it's cold out there on the ice!!!) posted by crazy_yeti at 5:42 AM on October 5, 2012 [1 favorite]
Have to say this seems suspiciously well mic-ed. Given that at least some mixing has happened at a later time, I'd be interested to see exactly what the process was that produced what we're hearing. posted by howfar at 5:49 AM on October 5, 2012
What do you mean by 'suspicious', exactly? I think the fakest case scenario is that they recorded some of the bits once with close mics and then recorded a synced performance for video. Ice really can make sounds like that. I've found similar pieces myself, though never as many in one spot as they have here. posted by echo target at 5:59 AM on October 5, 2012

"live sound" seems like a suspicious claim to make here.
I'm not denying that ice can make noises like this, but I wonder what the relationship between what we hear and what we see is. Is this the result of several days sound gathering on several locations, using a variety of mallets, put together and then synced to? Maybe. Given that what we're seeing isn't likely to be the whole story, I guess I'd like to know what the whole story is. posted by howfar at 6:09 AM on October 5, 2012
I need to look at post titles more often. posted by davebush at 6:17 AM on October 5, 2012

In a few of the shots you can see the fuzz above from what I'd assume is a pretty solid mic. I don't find it hard to believe. Lakes and winter can be pretty quiet places.
For me the biggest drawback is a not being able to play summer festivals. "Knebworth called? TELL THEM NO FUCKING WAY." posted by jimmythefish at 6:18 AM on October 5, 2012
Спасибо!
If there is a lake with monsters in the deep... harbouring 20% of Earths fresh water, and impenetrable (albeit very clear) depths, Baikal would be it, so, hopefully they weren't sleeping, or sound averse. ;) posted by infinite intimation at 6:25 AM on October 5, 2012
That was beautiful. It'd have been neat to hear this stuff played by Mickey Hart on Rolling Thunder. posted by Kronos_to_Earth at 8:13 AM on October 5, 2012
