Cabaret and burlesque are thriving all over the US and the UK, both in modern edgy productions and classic examples like Elaine Stritch or other big artists taking up residencies in small clubs in NYC and other cities.

One of the dangers of something like The X Factor is that, by default, it's a narrow view of what people might find interesting. It pursues the lowest common denominator of appeal. And really, the judges' role on the show isn't to highlight acts which are brilliant and fascinating. It's to determine which acts would make the most money after they are signed to contracts with the company producing the show.

I don't know that this video makes its point particularly well, but I fully support the sentiment it expresses.

Maybe a change in terminology to something more hip&trendy: "Steampunk Showtunes"?

Still, I think we need a lot less Simon Cowell and a lot more Mefi's Own John 'The Whelk' Leavitt.

Oh I can do better considering I used to host a twice monthly cabaret show.

I'm the one with no shirt

I believe Whelks video has upped this thread's disclaimer from "slight" to "partial" nudity. Please move to NUDECON 4.

Like seriously, are you allergic to shirts or something?

Great. Headlined by the extremely talented Frisky and Mannish of, among other things:
Question
Kate Bash
Beep (Have a Banana)

I was on stage with them once or twice and it was humbling. We'd do a bit of musical comedy but these guys are at another level.

Not that anybody would've guessed otherwise.

Pretty good, except Mannish should have been slapped with a giant prawn at the end.

As an American, let me repeat the question posed in the YouTube video: "Gary who? Seriously. Gary who?"

Ah ... thank you Internets: Gary Barlow.

Please move to NUDECON 4.

I attended NUDECON 4 a couple years ago. The cosplay was...disappointing.

You know.. Gary Barlow -- the member of Take That which Robbie Williams hated the most.

You're always the one with no shirt.

Sometimes, The Whelk wears a ruff, which is like a very short shirt that only covers the neck, but does so out to a considerable distance.

It's too bad it's so late in the year, we could make a mint with the Shirtless Whelk Calendar 2013. Maybe for 2014.

How had I not been exposed previously to the delight of Frisky & Mannish? Beep (Have a Banana) is the best thing I've seen all day! Although that Gypsy song was pretty choice as well.

Whelk, is that clip filmed at Palace of Wonders?

It was filmed at the sadly gone Lucky Cat Cafe in Brooklyn.
