Cabaret and burlesque are thriving all over the US and the UK, both in modern edgy productions and classic examples like Elaine Stritch or other big artists taking up residencies in small clubs in NYC and other cities.
One of the dangers of something like The X Factor is that, by default, it's a narrow view of what people might find interesting. It pursues the lowest common denominator of appeal. And really, the judges' role on the show isn't to highlight acts which are brilliant and fascinating. It's to determine which acts would make the most money after they are signed to contracts with the company producing the show.
I don't know that this video makes its point particularly well, but I fully support the sentiment it expresses. posted by hippybear at 12:07 PM on October 20, 2012 [2 favorites]

I believe Whelks video has upped this thread's disclaimer from "slight" to "partial" nudity. Please move to NUDECON 4. posted by nathancaswell at 1:14 PM on October 20, 2012 [1 favorite]

Pretty good, except Mannish should have been slapped with a giant prawn at the end. posted by CheeseDigestsAll at 2:22 PM on October 20, 2012

Sometimes, The Whelk wears a ruff, which is like a very short shirt that only covers the neck, but does so out to a considerable distance. posted by GenjiandProust at 3:56 PM on October 20, 2012
It's too bad it's so late in the year, we could make a mint with the Shirtless Whelk Calendar 2013. Maybe for 2014. posted by mephron at 3:58 PM on October 20, 2012
How had I not been exposed previously to the delight of Frisky & Mannish? Beep (Have a Banana) is the best thing I've seen all day! Although that Gypsy song was pretty choice as well. posted by winna at 4:21 PM on October 20, 2012
