I have not watched the Gangam Style video. Yet I do not feel as if I am missing anything. Am I broken inside?

I have had too much Gangam style. Do you have a video for that?

My friend was seeking advice on what to be for Halloween and I suggested the guy from the elevator in Gangnam Style and provided a link to the 10 hour version that scene.

I was reaaallllly hoping that the scene was slowed down to last 10 hours, but that might require the summoning of Eldritch-depth sounds.

I've started throttling a small furry creature every time someone posts a Gangnam-related something to the internet.

I just thought you should know that, but I'm afraid it's too late for Mr. Tiddles here.

"Can't get enough Gangam Style? "

See, this question confuses me to the point that I'm afraid to answer it, perhaps one of you English Major types can enlighten me on this.

If I answer "yes", am I saying "yes, I can't get enough." ?

But, if I answer "no", am I saying "no, I can't get enough." ?

And both of those statements make it sound like I want more...

I do NOT want more. Please...

Furthermore, I would like to suggest that we pretend this Gangnam thing never happened and we go back to daily posts about Lada Gaga and Steampunk. No, not Lady Gaga doing Steampunk (although, that may be a case of in which two wrongs DO make a right). I'm sorry I was ever critical of either of those topics and promise to stop saying bad things about Cory Whatshisname.

I was just thinking we didn't have enough FPP's about Gangnam Style.
posted by 1000monkeys at 2:56 PM on October 28, 2012 [4 favorites]

So what you're saying HuronBob is that you want to see an FPP about Lady Gaga doing a steampunk Gangnam Style video? And it should be Creative-Commons licensed and somehow tied in to the US election and/or Wikileaks?

Psy vs. Ghostbusters mashup

That's quite well done musically, but I've seen the original enough times for it to bother me that some of the video was flipped left-to-right.
posted by Wolfdog at 3:46 PM on October 28, 2012

They flip the visuals so it won't get automatically taken down for copyright infringement by YouTube (even though Psy doesn't seem to care, the YouTube detection tool sometimes rejects or deletes videos automatically if it can match up the video to something copyrighted).

No. But if you want to start, go for the "No Music" version, it's pretty zen.

I have not yet seen enough of this video, but I only watch the original a couple of times per day at this point.

The PSYning (23 sec. video mashup of Gangnam + The Shining)

Like A Bad White Guy Party Gangnam Style (video mashing up PSY, LMFAO, Dev, The Offspring, Bloodhound Gang)

Soundcloud (audio-only) mashups:
PSY x Avicii x Skrillex - Level Style
Kool & The Gangnam ("Fresh" mashup)

"Umma" Gangnam Style (guy and his mom dancing together)

PSY dancing to Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and Beyonce's "Single Ladies" (3 min. video)

Is the "infinite" part a reference to the fact that the audio continues playing while a caption indefinitely notifies "Images loaded 99%"?

Gangnam Style is not copyrighted, intentionally. Though maybe that's just the audio.

Specifically, you can buy just-vocals or just-instrumentals for most any YG Entertainment song and your purchase will include the right to use those vocals or instrumentals in remixes. That's part of what helps them to spread cross the 'net.

So a stage set for the International Cultural Festival at Beijing's premiere university has collapsed after too many people tried to dance to Gangnam-Style. I'm really hoping this is a sign that the phenomenon is finally.... Peking.

That the link markkraft posted above this does not reference Pop Will Eat Itself is a sad, sad reflection on the Blue.

Because I can still dig it.
I can.
(Also, Alan Moore knows the score. And Frank Miller is not crazy. This is my happy place. Oppah!)

This is fantastic. It's the audio equivalent of eg Andrew Plotkin's "Fun With Markov Chains". I don't quite get what the different colours in the grid represent; I need to spend some time looking at the source to work it out. (Something to do with the similarity to another beat?)

How time-consuming is the underlying analysis? How easy would it be to point this at any mp3(s) to apply the same technique?

Whoa, zarf, I used to work with that guy.

"How time-consuming is the underlying analysis? How easy would it be to point this at any mp3(s) to apply the same technique?"

The Echo Nest has a web service specifically for such purposes. One of the source JavaScript files is a JSON representing such analysis and so it would probably be almost trivial but not quite to do this to any other song's audio by switching to a different analysis and audio file. Grabbing the individual images used for your song's video will be more time consuming.

I think the colors are codes for similarities. When you hit a square of color X, there's a likelihood it'll jump to another square of color X. It's a bit confusing because it looks like a heat map of some kind, but I don't think it is.
