Oh, I don't know Zooey. Did you try looking out a window?

Is Kevin Costner holding the mouse that way to show it off in front of the camera, or because he's afraid of breaking it?

Missed most of those I'm a Mac and I'm a PC ads, featuring celebrity (if for no other reason than he is Metafilter's own) John Hodgman. Or maybe they just don't show up on this Windows box.

I mean, she's right by the window! You know what, Zooey, give me the phone. You don't get any more iPhones.

One of my favorites, but I'll always be a sucker for the piano in that song.

I don't think Ellen Feiss' commercial it is the best because she seems ridiculously high, although she does.

I don't think it is the best because she clearly doesn't even believe what she is saying, although that little grin about how the PC "devoured" her paper really says a lot.

I think it is the best because it is a Greek tragedy writ small. It is a lesson in the inescapability of fate and the illusion of choice as in classic noir. The commercial seems to be the result of one small decision and the irrefutable relentless logic of fate.

I think she just wanted to fuck off one day and not do her paper. Like Joe Gillis and his wrong turn, Ellen's one decision set in motion an inescapable chain of events that could not be stopped. That chain led its inevitable end. For Joe Gillis that meant lying dead in a pool. For Ellen, that chain led to her excuse being part of a nationwide ad campaign.

As in noir, we must ask ourselves how much was choice, and how much her hidden interior motives worked to bring about that end. Is the ad simply the result of a subconscious need for atonement. We can never know.
