I was rooting for those little guys! It killed me when that one finally got the momentum to get up on the surfboard only to fly off the other side. Also, I was alarmed to learn that they have tiny hands at the ends of their front flippers. How long before they develop opposable thumbs? posted by Maisie at 9:55 AM on March 12
I found myself leaning in my chair "helping" the little guy with the power of my mind the way I do when I'm caught up in a video game... posted by agatha_magatha at 11:22 AM on March 12

I watched most of that. And it was cool. But a couple things:
1. Night diving? As someone I know once said, "Eh. It's the same fish as during the day. They're just hungrier." I don't know if that's true, but, yeah, you could not pay me enough money.
2. Also, I could not shake the feeling that the little sea lion pup was desperately hiding from something. When he came out of the water and saw the little pup in his boat I was seriously squealing at the screen, GET IN THE BOAT GET IN THE BOAT GET IN THE FUCKING BOAT.
Not that the fucking kayak would do much of anything.
fuck the water. posted by kbanas at 11:50 AM on March 12
We recently had one come up and climb out of a tidal river and end up at the entrance to a local hospital. Fortunately, it got safely back into the water (but it would have had to cross a road to get there!). So they are persistent. That article also mentions someone finding a seal on their back porch!

I know, right? I think Metafilter has conditioned me to expect any cute animal video to have a tragic/cruel basis. So I expect this little guy's desperately trying to get out of the water because a pod of transient orcas has just shown up. posted by figurant at 2:10 PM on March 12

Not really, you often see very different fish. That being said, dude in the video seems to be alone which is... not ideal. posted by atrazine at 4:51 PM on March 12
