State sells birth data to Web site, raising ID theft fears. I'm glad I wasn't born in California.
No one should have to request that such private information be kept off the web. California has a hell of a lot of nerve. Nothing like breaching the privacy of millions of people in order to make a buck. I smell a lawsuit.

The birth certificate records have been deleted by Rootsweb.com because they "respect privacy."

State Sen. Debra Bowen, a Redondo Beach Democrat and member of the Senate Privacy Committee, said there was little evidence to suggest that thieves are taking such information to create fake identities.

They'll delete your info by request.
But first they'd have to inform you that its been sold and to whom, neither of which did they do nor are they compelled to do. So thats a lame excuse for the state to pull on its citizens

I agree, and I'm not making excuses for them, I'm just letting people know what their options are now that the deed's been done.
