The Ballad of the Wayfaring Stranger & the Dead Man's Whore by Sean Demory. Sean sent me this short story because he knows I'm interested in murder ballads. I thought it was chilling in a quietly persistent sort of way and very memorable. The story's already scored a couple of mentions in 2012 "recommended reading" lists, plus an honourable mention in Ellen Datrow's print anthology The Best Horror of the Year Vol. 5.
