Loved it! Go to 1:35 -- that woman does an amazing Diane Keaton/Annie Hall expression/face. "That's *exactly* what would happen. I'm Rogue."

I didn't want to love this, but just couldn't help myself.

Good writing, too. Those jokes are actually pretty darn spot-on for late 70s era Woody Allen.

I really, really, really, wanted to hate this.

But it was dead on 70s era Allen sooooo..

I do not hate it.

Reminds me of Werner Herzog's Home Movies, which is also a fun ride.

Metafilter: I really, really, really, wanted to hate this.

I should probably have added Wes Anderson's God of War to the FPP, since that seemed like the inspiration. But yeah, count me in the 'wanted to hate it, ended up loving it' camp. Probably because it was specifically based on Annie Hall/Manhatten rather than just a general pastiche. And Cyclops is perfect as the LA douchebag.

'Course on a basic level the X-Men ARE textually outsiders created by Jewish New Yorkers, so its not as far off as it might seem.

I was talking to Bryan Singer the other day, and I asked him "Did you see the new Wolverine movie yet, or what?" and he said "No. Jew?"

Ya get it? "Jew?" Not "did you see it?" but "Jew? Jew see it? Jew?" See the difference?

I would ding this for not having a scene set inside a blow-up indoor tennis court tent, but I don't think those exist anymore so I'll give it a pass.

The video's creators in the YouTube comments:
"That's actually Rogue. She touched Diane Keaton and absorbed her powers."

This is weirdly adorable. Bonus: I can ship Logan/Rogue without feeling vaguely disgusted with myself! (After 13 real-time years, Rogue will be legal age in Days of Future Past, right? Right?)

Also, wow, I don't think I realized til this moment how much Woody Allenesque New Yorker ambiance was imbued into Spider-Man all these years. Peter Parker is Woody Allen Protagonist with spider-powers. How did I not see this?

"I am going to go berserker, and you're going to regret it! .... Sniiiiiiiiiiiiiikt!"

I, too, surprised myself by how much I enjoyed this. Snikt snikt!

It would have been a bit too pointed if they'd made his love interest Jubilee.

Wait, we've gotten this far in the topic and nobody's made a joke about how just like Woody Allen, Wolverine seems to always be around women under half his age?

Seems so.

Wolverine seems to always be around women under half his age?

Maybe it's because he's 150 years old, which makes about 97.5% of the female U.S. population less than half his age.

Or Hisako from Astonishing X-Men, or the anime-pixie ninja girl from the current movie trailer, or any of the other random Asian girls I may be forgetting that he's played mentor/surrogate dad to. Naturally, Jean Gray would be playing the part of Mia Farrow.

Wolverine: Has anybody read that Sentinels are gonna march in New Jersey? Ya know? I read it in the newspaper. We should go down there, get some guys together, ya know, get some bricks and capes, and really explain things to 'em.

Professor X: There was this devastating satirical piece on that on the op-ed page of the Times, just devastating.

Wolverine: Whoa, whoa. A satirical piece in the Times is one thing, but eye beams and adamantium claws really gets right to the point of it.

Professor X: Oh, but really biting satire is always better than physical force.

Wolverine: No, no, physical force is always better with Sentinels.

It just occurred to me that Woody-Allen-as-Wolverine already sort of exists in the Marvel world as Vivisector in the old Milligan/Allred X-Statix. Except Vivisector's also gay.

Ang Lee's The Ice Storm sorta has Tobey McGuire as a Woody Allen type using Marvel superheroes as a metaphor for being disaffected, and then he played Spider-Man.

I guess i'm saying that "Woody Allen's Spider-Man" would work not as a joke but as a pretty traditional take on the character.
posted by Charlemagne In Sweatpants at 8:10 PM on August 6, 2013

Also, Tobey McGuire was an Allen surrogate (of sorts) in Deconstructing Harry, and then he played Spider-Man.
posted by ShutterBun at 12:48 AM on August 7, 2013 [2 favorites]

Tobey Maguire also played a weird freshman genius who is seduced by rakish Robert "Tony Stark" Downey Jr. in Wonder Boys, based on the novel by Jewish author Michael Chabon, who wrote the comic-geek-love-letter The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and also co-wrote Spider-Man 2.

It's rampant comic book movie meta-incest and I love it. (I also loved Maguire as Spider-Man.)
posted by nicebookrack at 2:04 PM on August 7, 2013 [1 favorite]

Tobey Maguire also played Nick Carraway in the recent film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, and The Great Gatsby would be a really lame superhero name.
posted by Atom Eyes at 12:19 PM on August 8, 2013

The Great Gonzo would be an excellent superhero name and an even more excellent protagonist in a film about Prohibition-era debauchery, co-starring Tobrey Maguire with Muppets.

That guy's terrible delivery and facial expressions made me appreciate Woody Allen more. Also yes, she nailed Keaton.
