Well, I wonder what you make of this, found off Ocean City, NJ.

There's putting your best foot forward, but this is ridiculous.

(Seriously - Fingers crossed there's a wacky medical waste story in here somewhere.)

Given the number of people who jump off the Golden Gate Bridge, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. (Though, given the currents in the Gate, maybe not.)

What all these feet washing up have in common is that they're in shoes, and that's because shoes a) keep the foot intact, and b) float.

Just try not to consider the fact that the vast majority of human-ocean interaction is barefoot, or you'll start extrapolating.

I liked it better when it was just empty shoes hanging from telephone wires. Call me old-school, but the severed foot part is carrying things too far.

The human-foot-found-in-the-ocean meme. It seems that when a body is deposited into the ocean, the feet are preserved from predators, protected by the shoe which also makes it buoyant enough to wash up on shore, like a crab trap. And when currents push debris in regular directions, certain unexpected places can become veritable shoe stores of the dead.

No worries—but your link goes to a related 2008 MeFi post (there was also one in 2011, and I thought there was another last year announcing that the mystery had been solved, but I can't seem to find it now so I might've imagined it) and my link goes to the Wikipedia page.

Somewhere out there is another green-and-black-mesh Puma running shoe, size 11 1/2.
