I was about to come in and be like "My roommate totally agrees with you" but, uh, hiya.

This is also an appropriate time to mention that Copronymus has been known to make awesome lists ranking various disparate categories from best to worst, e.g. "A list of Ninja Turtles and the artists for whom they are named from best to worst" and "Neapolitan ice cream flavors and famous Italian heads of state from best to worst" or something like that. I forget the other categories but the lists are always top hole.

All this time I thought the inappropriate overuse of hashtags was itself the joke, not something that needed to be joked about.

I don't like those tags on TV shows that tell you what to think about the action going on like#thatjusthappened or #awkwardsilence! Don't police my emotions, you're not the boss of me, TV. Sheesh.

Yeah, this is my biggest (basically only) problem with Pretty Little Liars; it just gets ridiculous.

For a while the three or four hashtags that Pretty Little Liars would throw up on the screen would drive me crazy, but I've gotten to this point where they're just hilarious. I probably spend a full minute just rolling around the couch laughing at them during every episode. On the other hand, apparently it's pretty successful as a marketing strategy.

Here's the source video on YouTube without the Business Insider ads wrapped around it. For once the YouTube comments are interesting; here's the same gag done nine months ago by Foil Arms and Hog. The joke's pretty obvious, not sure anyone's claiming plagiarism.

Is #hashtags on TV shows a real thing? Can I see some screenshots, just out of curiosity?
posted by Eideteker at 8:50 AM on September 25, 2013

A real thing at least on some shows. Here's an example from the previously mentioned Pretty Little Liars.

Eideteker, ignore the macro on the screencap and look to the bottom. Teen Wolf also suggests topical hashtags throughout the episode.

although the teenwolf hashtags seem to be evolving into running metaocmmentary. and I hope this trend continues.

They are. I knew the hashtags on TW had arrived as a commentary of their own when they started making dick jokes. Two characters too close together in the closet? #somethingcameup (did not make that up.)

I really don't want a show to livetweet itself to me while I'm watching. Is this the modern equivalent of canned laugh tracks?

Also, do torrenters tend to crop the hashtags out of the frame? There's been a few times when I've caught something on TV rather than Pirate Bay and was struck by the hashtag at the bottom. I think Community?

Those close ups of Jimmy Fallon making the hashtag hand sign were fascinating. I had to try and pause the video because he has THE LONGEST MIDDLE FINGER EVER compared to his index finger. (0:45 if the link doesn't work).
posted by Brockles at 9:23 AM on September 25, 2013

is it just the angle of his hand? because the other fingers on the other hand don't seem as disproportionate.

There might be a little foreshortening going on because of the angle of the index finger. But he does have a pretty short index finger if you look a his hand pictured here. Also, it looks like they cut the exact same shot of his hands doing the hashtag into the video a bunch more times (for example at 0:49, 0:51, 0:55, 1:31, etc.)

Serious #question: I've noticed that the #egregious #overuse of hashtags (+ way 2 many abbrevs) seems to come most often from #older people in my Twitter feed. NE1 know why that is? Did everyone #over50 get the wrong #tutorial? Can they not see how #needlessly #difficult it makes #reading their tweets? Who do they think is going to #click on something like #politics? I don't know, I saw it as kind of like the "available on iTunes! *wink*" shameless self-promotion - kind of obnoxious, but also sending up its own obnoxiousness.

Is this related to the fact that, once you pass a certain age, you start putting random words in "quotation" marks?

It took me a long time to realize that the intent of "quoting" words like that was basically to give them the sort of emphasis that you'd normally use italics for. This has done wonders to assuage my fear of the quote gremlin, whose existence I'd previously been certain of.

I'm trying to twit and instamatic and tumble and all that because I'm told that it's the only way to build an audience anymore, but I swear to fucking god that every time I put a hashtag in a tweet, I am transported back in time to the front seat of our silver and purple Suburban with that giant microphone with the thick coily cord in my hand and my father instructing me that I should make up a proper CB handle and use the lingo correctly so I'd be taken seriously.
