Horrible, bad cat trick: 1. Place mirror on floor. 2. Suspend cat over mirror -- observe freak-out (possibly lose some flesh if you are not an expert cat wrangler. 3. Gently set cat on mirror. Prepare for "FUCK YOU, HUMAN glare. 4. Try step one again, prepare for FOOL ME ONCE, YOU ASSHOLE glare.

As so often is the case with Internet cats, Lacan is the unspoken humor here. (See also: "I can haz cheezeburger? A post-structuralist analysis of the hierarchy of needs in opposition to the aesthetics of repurposed imagery in juxtaposition with the typography of the masses").

Old Lady Cat used to go hammer & tongs with her reflection when she was younger. Like all cats, she has a healthy ego so the fact some asshole who looked just like her was on her territory? THAT WILL NOT STAND.

I have a Jaded. He does not care. I hope the imminent kitten has a better reaction.

Why was that 900 times funnier in French? I too enjoy the doubtful ones...

Weirdly, my cat runs at the mirror and puts his paws on it when he can only see himself, but if I am also reflected in the mirror, he's just "whatever, it's a mirror." He's perfectly willing to believe there is another him trapped in the closet but not another human.

I have a Jaded. He does not care.

I have a dog. There's a full-length mirror on my closet door. He doesn't even know the mirror exists. I tell him over & over "Look! There's a dog in the mirror!" & he gets excited, but quizzical because he does not detect keywords like biscuit, bone or squirrel. He WILL NOT look at the mirror.

This confounds me, having been a cat owner up until the age of 35, and now finding myself to be a dog owner. Dogs just. Don't. Get. It. sometimes.

Anyone else get that weird ad at the beginning?

So Iran is going to nuke us into the stone age.

But the cats, are very cute, so I feel better now.

It took her a few years and bumped noses to learn how they work, but I think my cat understands mirrors now. When she catches my eye in the mirror, she gives me her "hello" meow.

When Hope was a kitten, she first encountered "Mirror Cat," the uncanny creature that would become her nemesis (well, at least one of her nemeses).

She sized her up carefully at first, ears back, eyes wide and gleaming, parsing out Mirror Cat's ever move until the time was right to...

STRIKE!

and yet, somehow, Mirror Cat managed to use some fiendish ninja magic to beat her to the punch, deftly delivering a sharp blow to her forehead with enough power to knock her back on her hind legs.

After shaking her add and glaring with a mixture of shock and hatred at "that sorcerous bitch, Mirror Cat," she wisely decided on a policy of détente which continues to this day.

Guys, guys, a real French cat has responded in thread, and you haven't even noticed!

Bonjour, Susu! Qui est un bon minou? Tu es le plus mignon!

Oh I love that stuff. Not only funnier because it's French, much of it is exceptionally well timed and comes so unexpected.

The little bits of French I can actually pull out here and there make it all the funnier. "Mais, attends, c'est moi!"

My dear departed Boo cat used to play with toys in front of the hallway mirror, making sure that he could watch how clever he was. I regret never filming him.

My cat completely ignores mirrors. I've never managed to get a reaction to the one in the bedroom or the bathroom from her. She also ignores other cats, and people, and basically anything that isn't a piece of ribbon, some sort of container that she can fit in, or a feather.
