Martyn Ashton gets a little help from his friends to finish Bike Party 2 Earlier this year, Martyn Ashton, one of the fathers of trials riding, sustained life changing injuries (Previously). He is currently paralyzed from the waist down. When he was injured, he had partially completed the sequel to his first Road Bike Party video. His friends, Chris Akrigg and Danny MacAskill, helped finish the new video.

Man, that's an amazing video. So bummed he got hurt leading up to this.

Saw this earlier over at bikerumor.com. Danny's backwards, downhill front wheelie is just unbelievable.

I'm going to go check in on Martyn's current condition.

I'm always amazed watching Danny MacAskill just how utterly playful he seems. He seems to take a real joy in what he does. Other riders are great technically, but they just seem to lack something that he has.

Of course it might be that when you're as good as he is you can afford to be a bit looser with it all, but still, he's got something special.

I tried to post this but felt like I couldn't do justice to what will almost certainly be Ashton's last video on a bicycle.

My favorite clip from RBP1 was at 4:08. If you're not watching closely, you'd think it was just a piece of B-roll in there as a transition. But he's riding at 20+ mph and hops up a parallel curb onto the sidewalk. Any normal person tries this and they'll have scars, but it's just nothing to these guys.

Ashton again broke his back on September 1st 2013 during a demo at Moto GP. A 3 meter fall from a high bar left him with severe damage to his spinal cord and dislocated T9 and T10 vertabrae.

Damnit

Man, it's just so thrilling to see this video. Just amazing...

...but for whatever reason watching the outtakes this time was doubly wince-inducing, given how the video's pervaded by thoughts of Ashton's ultimate injury.

It's a great story and fitting tribute to Martyn Ashton's spirit.

It also reminds me - must get the back brake looked at on my bike.

I am not his doctor, nor occupation therapist, but it's possible for people with spinal cord injuries to continue riding handcycles: streamlined tricycles powered by rotary or ski arm motion.

Off road and road racing.

Between this and the other one, I'm starting to feel inadequate riding forwards on two wheels.

Hope his recovery goes as well as it can.
