I just had an epiphany: clickbait is just the second (light-side) half of news programming commercial lead-ins.

I like the contrast between the two sites.

The Millions (first link) seem more like a satire of The Millions itself; it has that slightly awkward feel of smart people trying to be clever, rather than just smart people being clever.

Waterstones (second link) seems to understand the language of Buzzworthy and Upworthy better, and nails it.

The one really weird trick is that it doesn't warrant that: except for the very large or the very niche, purely ad-supported websites don't make nearly enough revenue on their own to survive. They're all skating by mostly on VC money, hoping they can get big enough fast enough to be one of the handful of survivors once the VC people wise up.

I'm really hoping this is just a weird transitional period for the web, after which we can all go back to just reading each others' blogs.
