Fans of nonsense will be sad to learn that there are only three episodes in the web series Drunk Judge Judy. But what episodes they are! 1, 2 and 3.

I used to work swing shift and I've used a timed TV start, timed to the Judge Judy show, to scare me awake. It worked quite well. She doesn't apply anything to do with any notion of legality - it's a morality play and she is scary.

Here is a soundboard.

Those are hilarious. I kind of dig her ever-changing hairstyles from shot to shot (variations on a theme, more than anything).

Are these TV court shows just legal play acting? I would think the verdicts can't result in devices like wage garnishment that give real small claims verdicts their teeth. So wouldn't most of these cases ultimately end up in real courts?

Ha! This is great.

My understanding is that those TV judge shows pay the "damages" rendered to the awarded side. Both parties get a night in a hotel and their grievances put behind them.

Judge Judy Sheindlin is the highest paid person on TV. $900K an episode.

Are these TV court shows just legal play acting?

IIRC, plaintiffs and defendants have actual small claims court cases, or possibly valid disputes they've submitted to the show. If they go on the show, they drop the legal case and agree to have the dispute settled through arbitration, ie: the law show. They both get paid to be on the show, and if the plaintiff wins, restitution is usually covered by whatever the defendant was paid. The Wikipedia page for The People's Court breaks it down pretty well, I think.

dgaicun, i suspect that's addressed in the litigants' contracts with the show and the compensation they received, for which they're expected to make semi-nice with each other after they leave the set. it isn't even legal play-acting, it's a moral theater of the underclass with a judge-figure resolving. judy is a (rich) old dom, and her audience likes to watch her spank people.

This is just a shorter version of regular Judge Judy.

My occasional viewing tells me it's more lower middle class/working class than "underclass."

Is it me or does Judge Judy remind anyone else of Al Pacino in drag?

Reminds me of this epic prank that some legendary hipsters pulled on JJ.

Great observation in the Vice article (linked in the DM article, which has video) about how JJ likes to wear super wide-legged stonewash normcore jeans under her robe.

Here is Johnny Rotten's case on Judge Judy. I am curious to see the whole episode.

This is great! Not 10 minutes ago I was explaining JJ to some German law students--I think they were a little puzzled. Judge Judy is legend!

The comments for that article are amazing. If you were trying to summarize the mind of the Daily Mail commenter in a nutshell, I doubt you could do much better than them believing that people can and ought to be charged with perjury for lying on Judge Judy.

Oh man, that was funny.

Oh hey, I know the guy who did this, or I should say I know several of his siblings. His entire family is the sort that would do this type of thing, making something ridiculous even more ridiculous. I'm pretty sure he even works in television, so I guess he made the right career choice.

None of these are as funny as the real Judge Judy episode where THE Johnny Rotten was the defendant.

This is just so wonderful. Makes me think of (and deeply miss) Jandrewedits, with the Star Trek footage.

That is epic, and I don't use that word lightly! Even better than when some friends of mine bullshitted their way onto the Rikki Lake show way back when.
